He was treated very harshly.

These days he’d have got a slap on the wrist.

IMO Matt LeTissier admitted far worse.
Yes I agree with that unfortunate to get caught it was a bit of a sting -Guilty - yet the sentence was way OTT compared in todays game as you say former players have admitted doing worse Le Tissier was honest enough to admit what was going on in his era.....

Blimey....that is worse than just having a bet on a game to lose just to cover the win bonus
In those days though @McMagic is in his opinion in an era of supposed innocence five class players some internationals the FA wanted to set an example - I still feel they went way to far in the punishment though OTT
As a blue just about to see him play I felt robbed by them ...... I was 6 years old plus on hearing the story was fuming with the FA and not Tony Kay..... who scored 9/10 in that game....in the paper that reported him to the police , and FA.....

Problem was that the wages were not significant those days and just better than a decent normal wage. Win bonuses played a big part to make it a decent wage or average wage. The win bonus was a good incentive but I know the game in question (Ipswich Town v Sheff Wed) was historically a home banker and that was the main reson for the bet. Not a match fix but to cover the doubtful win bonus. That is why I wouldn't say he cheated or stole. MoTM award despite losing is enough proof IMO that he wasn't match fixing.

Can't even find a Jimmy Corbett who played either for us or Preston back in the 1940's Joey!!Great picture though,Len Shackleton too:)

but can't find a Jimmy Corbett playing for Newcastle either
I looked totally mystified it clearly states he's a blue player, and we did play away in white in that era - can @Eggs- @Major Gowen or any other oldies on the thread help no disrespect just for football knowledge .......lol;)
It's a bit annoying all that work scanning to get the wrong picture well spotted by @Dario Terracotta though;)

.....as @Dario Terracotta says, it’s clearly a Preston player, Joey. Even I wasn’t around then, but I have unearthed a ‘Willie’ Corbett who played for Preston in 48/49 season. Not sure if that helps solve the problem.

Thanks Eggs I just seen the caption and remember we did play in white shirts in our away games in that era - a bad mistake by the editor of the book ..... doh

...the recent pictures have been outstanding, Joey. Some really interesting stuff you’re posting. It’s not surprising the odd caption is wrong in books given the time span.
