Peter Farrell was a brilliant captain. Never stopped running, his face was permanently flushed with the effort. Could do with his type today. I remember bunking off school to watch England v Ireland which was played at Goodison. I was stood behind the goal that Peter Farrell scored Ireland's second goal in a 2 - 0 win. I think it was the first time England had lost in a home game?

Reading again the Tommy Jones narrative that Joey66 posted, it mentioned Tommy Jones defending a corner by heading the ball back to his goalie, Ted Sagar. Back in the late 1950's, I was playing for a club in the semi-pro Yorkshire League. The opposition had a corner, the ball came in and for some reason no one went for it. I was stood on the edge of the six yard box and the ball dropped on my head, never even had to jump. I turned towards our goal and cushion headed the ball into our goalie's hands. At half-time, our manager collared me and told me in no uncertain terms that he didn't want me to do it again. I remember saying to him 'Tommy Jones used to do it'.

....I was convinced you were going to stick it in the top corner. Good on you.

Every story i’ve heard about Jones convinces me he was ‘before his time’ and probably Everton’s greatest ever CB. Loved to have seen him, but I like your descriptor of being like a John Stones who can defend.

Just got home from a three day trip to Liverpool where I spent about 15 hours in the Lpool library going through old Daily Post and Echos to try to obtain photos missing from my collection. I attach a good one of Alex from 1962. I will be posting the photos, mainly from the 60s on my Pinterest account in the next few weeks from where a great number seem to end up on this site (Saves me the time of posting !)
