Wally Fielding RIP - I was at one of the 'Hall of Fame' bashes at the Adelphi I suppose almost 20 years ago when Wally was a guest. With the passage of time and the fact I'd had a few bevvies my recollection may not be 100%, but Wally had a turn on the microphone. He must have been into his early 80's by then. Bearing in mind his career didn't really kick off until the end of the WW2 when he signed for us aged 25 (& stayed through thick & thin for 14 years), he said he knew Everton wanted to sign him (or he may actually have done so) when a Tottenham scout came sniffing at the door at his home somewhere in London (?). He said he'd made his mind up who he wanted to play for (us) and told the caller to "Fack orf!!!" & slammed the door shut, much to the amusement of the hundreds in attendance. Left us in 1959, had retired to Cornwall but was still a Blue!Wally Fielding and Dave Hickson -
