Many younger fans perhaps find our reverence for the man baffling. It's quite straightforward.

He hated losing as much as we did; worked his proverbials off to ensure it happened rarely; demanded nothing less than total effort, most of all from himself; and had the skill to match the work-rate.

I loved him for that then, and nothing in the intervening years has diminished that affection one jot.
Agree mate, always came across to me that if you were in the trenches so as to speak,he was the sort of fella you would want with you.

My original post was about an event in 1966 when I was fourteen, when I commented on something that I genuinely thought was funny, and that on a day when we were in full celebration mode.
You responded commenting on something that happened almost twenty years later. Totally different and tragic scenario, and yes, I totally agree with your statement about them being the cause of our exile from Europe. I share your dislike for that lot but maybe not to the depth you have.
