Old Everton Pictures

Romelu Lukaku joined an elite Everton goalscorers’ club on Sunday when he neatly nodded his 50th league goal for the Blues.

The names on eEvertons post-War list of half-century scorers are familiar, even household - Graeme Sharp (who got there in 125 games), Bob Latchford (112), Alex Young and Alan Ball (both 109), Joe Royle (95) and Roy Vernon (79).So who exactly was Fred Pickering, a centre-forward who scored 50 league goals in only 76 matches for Everton Football Club but is sometimes unfairly overlooked when the club’s celebrated centre-forwards are named? Fred Boomer Pickering- who holds a unique record -
he scored two successive hat tricks at Goodison park in one week - a hattrick for Blackburn v us one week then on his Home debut at Goddison again scored a hattrick in a 6-0 win over Notts Forest on his debut.....

Fred Pickering scoring record with us - spoke to my older brother last night and he reckons he was one top striker as a no 9- only for his knee injury he would have gone on to great things - just look at his strike rate for us below -

In total, Pickering scored 70 times in 115 matches for Everton – an average of a goal every 1.6 games. Such numbers are pretty impressive for a failed left-back who was converted to centre-forward by Blackburn boss Jack Marshall in what proved to be an inspired gamble.

Great record. Did he play early 60s. I started going in 1967 as a young kid in the boys pen and don't remember him. And was his career finish early by that knee injury

Yes mid 1960s really- March 1964,for a record then of £85,000- fans were scared he would replace the GV , but he then played out wide sometimes - his cartilage injury made him move on to Forest ,and then Blackpool ....where he still scored well - he retired in his native Blackburn before sadly passing away this year - his cup goals in 1966 certainly helped us to Wembley success his one was injured just before the semi final - he accepted it as he knew his knee was not 100 percent!

....I think it might be Ronnie Clayton.
I googled the teams and his name did jump out at me, then a picture of the Blackburn Squad, but the photo wasn't conclusive, if I was going to put a quid on somebody as an outsider, it would be him.
CBAd throwing it over to a Rovers site, like i said, I was none the worse in my ignorance prior.

One thing did crop up though, I saw George Sharples on their squad list. At first I thought he moved the other way in the Pickering deal, but a check found he moved on 1st March and Fred came in on the 10th
