Is it just coincidence that the two team photos are at Villa Park
Fate was not kind to the great Fred Pickering. One of my first favourites in blue. Brilliant first full season and the goal at anfield in the 0-4 massacre of the reds had me a fan for life. Missing the Wembley final and possible World Cup involvement in the samesummer knocked the stuffing out of him. Off to the other blues at Birmingham and then the Seasiders. Where he is still revered to this day. In fact it was the 50th anniversary just recently of a famous game at Deepdale. Preston, Blackpool's nearest and not so dearest rivals needed to win to stay up basically. Blackpool needed a win to go up into the top division. A full house at Easter of fevered spectators witnessed quite a game. PNE 0-3 Blackpool. Fred got a hat trick and the picture of him swinging from the bar after notching his 3rd goal is hung on many an old Tangerine supporters bedroom wall to this day!
those were the times when a blue fan tried ages to get a light for his ciggie lolVs Spurs 72
Love this site. This photo has helped fill another twenty minutes or so of solitary confinement. I could only find two occasions when Hickson scored at home to Sunderland and on one of those Bollands was not in goal for Sunderland. I have just read the match report on the brilliant site "Everton Independent Research Data" and strongly suspect this is Hickson scoring his second on 14 Sep 1957. The reports goes "The bold Donovan still captaining the side well, added his force to the attack from which Hickson scored his second. It was from his centre the Hickson nodded the ball towards goal against the wind which caused the ball to hang. Bolland and Aitken were foxed by the flight but Hickson sensing the position quickly nipped in between both of them"" If you got this photo from a book are you able to confirm my thoughts. The Cannon ball kid sniffing for a goal v Sunderland -
