Once again Joey, you have excelled. These are brilliant photos and the little clips of journalism are a joy, we don't have really good sportswriters like they did back in the day. One thing that 'tickled me' was' the
Turnstile fiddle' of 1895, I honestly believe that some of those lads that worked the turnstiles back in 1895
had relations that used to work the ' Pay booths' at Wallasey & Birkenhead.
Too true even in the late sixties at most grounds every attendance announcement was frowned upon as being under cooked....... lol

It came into its own in the 70s once the (its 50 yrs old ffs) New Stand was finished...well they had to pay for it somehow

Some weeks the joke attendance figure was the only thing to make you smile.

Edit; that and the sight of the sky filled with cushions...

And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky

Did one ground in that era have the VAT & taxmen on them suspicious of way to low home attendances as the ground was smaller & easier to check the turnstiles ? Thought I had read it somewhere they got away with a warning -
