Bobby Collins was a member of Everton's holy trinity with Alex Young and Roy Vernon. - a letter sent in to a newspaper -
As an Everton fan of very long-standing I was sad to hear of the death of Bobby Collins. He was one of postwar Everton's greatest players, largely responsible for our winning the Division One title in 1962-63, along with the other two members of the "holy trinity", Alex Young and Roy Vernon; and virtually single-handedly the reason for our having stayed in the division the previous year.

Back in the late 60,s early 70,s as I remember in a Cheshire Cup game.
We were just a mere gang of lads that started a sunday league team and went from strength to strength in the birkenhead sunday league that literally thrashed everybody in our first season.
Of course to play against and be on the same pitch as Dave Hickson was unbelievable.
Ellesmere Port Social I recall as being their name.
Sincerely our lads were welcomed back at their place after the match and a great afternoon ensued.

...terrific, fascinated to know more about when you played against him?

I got to know him a bit, I’d come from playing for a top club when I worked with him but my folks were still in awe when he rang the house to talk about our next game. He loved John Willie Parker, said they both should’ve played for England but the team was picked by committee in those days.

....when Dave managed me he asked me to play for Everton in a Charity Game one Sunday afternoon at Crawfords club in Wavertree. He knew my allegiance and said the old fellas needed a youngster to do their running around. No idea who was playing until I got in the dressing room, found myself getting changed next to Derek Temple.

Still so enthusiastic about playing, it was a great experience for a young Evertonian to play alongside a number of true legends.
