I used to live in Maghull and on a Sunday morning Mick Lyons and Andy King would be out on the grassed area (in the middle of The Round Meade) kicking a ball about........every kid in the Green Park estate would come over, we'd pick sides and have a full on game (Mick on one side, Andy on the other). Great lads and a great example for younger kids.............can't imagine our modern day heroes in Alderley Edge doing this?
This used to happen in the 60s too. After the Formby pubs had shut on Sunday afternoon, players and teams, red and blue, amateur and professional would line up and have at it, in the traditional coats for goal posts 'next goals the winner' manner.
Proper decorum (of a sort) was observed...the amateurs would only clog amateurs and professionals would only clog fellow pros...more than one pro on pro punch up (Pickering Vs Yeats was reputed to have been right on) ensued in the absence of proper Reffs and TV cameras...especially after a contentious Derby - allegedly.
