One of his managers (Joe Mercer perhaps?) said that it was a great pity Stan could not pass a bookmakers as well he could pass a football.

For his first England cap he agreed two new boot sponsor deals and wore odd boots, one Gola & one Adidas (from memory). I saw a picture of that many years ago.
