1982 - Man Utd 1-1 Everton. A draw for the Blues against Ron Atkinson's Utd at Old Trafford. Graeme Sharp's 1st half goal was cancelled out by a late Frank Stapleton strike. EFC rose to 7th in the league table.
Jan 5, 1986 - Everton 1-0 Exeter City. The Blues won this FA Cup 3rd Round tie over Exeter City to advance to the FA Cup 4th round. Gary Stevens scored EFCs only goal.
Jan 5, 1980 - Everton 4-1 Aldershot. The Blues advanced to the FA Cup 4th Round with a win over Division 4 Aldershot. Goals from Bob Latchford, Andy King, Asa Hartford & Brian Kidd satisfied the Goodison crowd.
Jan 3, 2000 - Everton 2-2 Leicester City. The first game of the new Millennium at Goodison saw EFC draw with the Foxes live on Sky. Goals from Don Hutchinson & a David Unsworth penalty earned the Blues a point.
Jan 2, 1984 - Birmingham City 0-2 Everton. A vital league win at St Andrews for the under pressure EFC manager Howard Kendall. Goals from Gary Stevens & Andy King delighted the travelling EFC support & effectively started the momentum that led to EFC glory days under Kendall.
On this day in 1934, the Toffees beat Birmingham City, watched by 20,582 at Goodison Park. Ted Critchley & Jimmy Cunliffe (deputising for Dixie Dean) scored. Critchley become a publican in Stockport - Cunliffe made a living as a bowls player in the 1950s.
Travelling by air to an away match was a novelty for Everton in 1972 (it's now a regular occurrence) when they flew to play Norwich City. Note the use of a DC-3 (Dakota) aircraft - WW2 technology and comfort levels!
Born in 1921, John McIlhatton. Great things were expected of the Scottish winger when he signed for the Toffees just after WW2, but he was unlucky with injuries & left in 1949 after making 58 appearances. He went on to play for Dundee. Tragically, he died at just 33.
