Possibly a reason why the players of that era were so technically good, their first touch had to be so accurate to control the ball as the pitches were often in such a poor state, unlike the surfaces that today's players enjoy.

I think that's Hillsborough. Last away game of the 1969/70 season.

On closer inspection of the pic it looks like the crowd behind the goal is a bit too near the pitch for it to be Chelsea.

Played 1899-1910, and later became a director. Had a house in Aigburth which he named Duncan.

In 1911 he asked to play as an amateur but the FA refused his request. He also played three Tests against Australia.
He opened his sports outfitting shop and became the official kit supplier to the leading Lancashire clubs. More here :
