Everton smashed the British transfer record in March 1964 when Harry Catterick signed Blackburn Rovers forward Fred Pickering in a deal worth £85,000.

The reaction from Evertonians was one of bemusement and anger as they saw the new arrival as a direct threat to the place of terrace hero Alex Young.

Catterick, however, felt he needed to add more firepower to his side, with the Blues just two points off the top of the table and competing for the First Divison crown.

His decision was instantly justified when Pickering, selected ahead of Young, netted a hat-trick on his debut against Nottingham Forest at Goodison Park.

Another win in the next game, against Pickering’s former club Blackburn Rovers, saw the Blues go top, but they would ultimately fail in their title bid, finishing five points adrift of champions Liverpool.

The striker was surprisingly omitted from the 1966 FA Cup side in favour of Mike Trebilcock, who similarly went onto to vindicate his inclusion with a dramatic brace in a 3-2 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Pickering scored 70 goals in 115 appearances for the Toffees before leaving for Birmingham City in 1968.
