Old Photos Of Where You Live

Father Hopkins, Father Songhurst, Father Whittaker, Father Taaffe (he was in charge of the altar boys [I was one for a time], an absolute nasty piece of work, he was), Father Hunt (who officiated at my sister's wedding in April 1966) who all the young girls at St John's secondary modern girls school in Sessions Road lusted after, if what my sister told me was correct!

As a choirboy/altarboy, we used to dread being on with Hopkins. His hour-long mass would always overrun - he would always be ranting and raving in the pulpit for ages!
Mentioned Father Hunt to the wife and she immediately said the girls loved him ?. North Dingle girl

Many a happy hour or 3 spent here.

It was an Art Deco masterpiece inside - gone for a few shops:rant:
Edit; went under various names...The Plaza, The Guamont, The Allerton Odeon
Amazing to see P51 Mustangs being transported along Allerton Road. Apparently they were being taken to the Dunlop factory in Speke before being released to their units

Sugar fueled mayhem on Saturday mornings in there during early 70’s!

Think I remember that they even had a goldfish pond in the foyer!

The ‘Classic’ that replaced it was never the same.

Would have been 1970 Saturday mornings when I went, before I left Sefton Park school , yes it had a goldfish pond in the foyer. The Classic was massive though because it absorbed the old cinema’s balcony, I remember everything being brown when it reopened, carpet and seats etc. seemed dead posh compared to The Abbey.
