….if I remember rightly, the booths were at both entrances to the tunnel in those days. We used to ‘hitch hike’ a lift through and go to New Ferry baths which was always absolutely freezing.

True.
Unlike the ferries that only had pay booths on the Birkenhead side which was a long standing privilege they claimed via Birkenhead Priory's grant to operate a ferry back in the 13th century...tunnels not envisaged back then.
 

Trams at the pier head - my father in law failed his motorbike test down there at the driving test centre - as his bike tyre got stuck in the tram line & he went off in the wrong direction lol
