Thornton Heath, just west of Croydon where I was born. An old respectable South London suburb which may now not unreasonably described as having “seen better days”.

….my uncle lived in the first road on the right of the station. He had a long garden which overlooked the station platform. He was lovely man, a Scouser who married a Surrey lady. It was the early 60s, I remember him walking me to Selhurst Park to watch Palace, I’m sure Glazer was in goal which amused me because Palace were known as the Glazers back then.

We went down there and stayed for the ‘66 FA Cup Final. My Mum & Dad went the match & took my uncle who was a Red. I was 9. I look back and can’t believe they never took me with the spare ticket but at least I was in London.

Thanks for posting, great memories of Thornton Heath, I thought it was ever so posh back then.

Thornton Heath’s main problem was that it was always in Croydon’s shadow. Any inward investment went straight into Croydon, particularly after the planning laws were “tinkered with” to remove height restrictions. Croydon then became a little Chicago architecturally and Thornton Heath declined in comparison from that point on.

….I had to go there for work a few years before I retired. I think my hotel was near the stop after Thornton Heath, went past Selhurst en route. My meeting was in a government building in Croydon and it was all bit ‘tatty’ around there.

There were at leat 6 government buildings in the 70’s & 80’s. Mostly occupied by the then “Property Services Agency” and The Home Office.
