A lot of continental European footballers see the likes of Barca and Madrid as the dream to aspire to I think

If you're English then a club like Man United or Liverpool might have more drawing power, but if you live on the continent it's the Classico teams you want to play for

What i have always found odd, is that how more players wouldnt prefer to be one of the best players for a top top team in a second/third tier league like the eredivise/spl/portugal than play for someone like Brighton or Bournemouth.

We all know the answer that Brighton or Bournemouth pay far more than these clubs, but if i was someone like Mario Lemina at Southampton, would you not prrefer to be turning out for Galatasary or Ajax or Celtic?

As you say, it's the money

Most players see this as a way to make a living and they follow the money as a result

Also, playing for Southampton you probably have more chance for sponsorship deals and stuff than you would at an Ajax because the Premier League is a bigger League overall

I kind of understand it to be honest. It probably seems a lot cooler to play in the Premier League, even if you're mid table, than it would be to play in the Portuguese League and win it with someone like Sporting or Benfica, because you're playing in the "Best League in the World"

I do like it when great players play in the smaller leagues though. You look at someone like Larrsson at Celtic. He loved his time there and he's still regarded as an all-timer, even if he did spend so long in the SPL, so it does happen now and then. I think when he was asked about El Classico at Barca he said "It's not even a real Derby, you don't even play in the same City. Now the Old Firm, THAT'S a Derby!"

You also look at someone like Tadic, look how he is doing at Ajax, i bet he is far more enjoying his season this year than any other ones at Southampton.
But i suppose he has already had that big contract at Southampton, so he has had best of both worlds

South America too, especially them, former colonies of Spain, same language, similar culture, mentality etc.. Same for you and likes of Australia, New Zealand, USA, too bad for you though they are not really footballing countries so not a lot great players from there. I would also say in Europe Scandinavians look toward Britain and Germany a lot more then toward Spain or Italy for example, Balkans and Eastern Europe players beside Real and Barca also look toward Germany and Italy lot more then likes of Britain or France. I guess historical connections still play role here.
