Our Goodison Photographs

Thanks for posting a fantastic set of photos. Some great long lost views of the old Goodison Rd stand. Some called it the Mauretania stand because of its scale. The terrace held over 20,000 people and was the main provider for the famous Goodison Roar. Also the picture from just beneath the old Park end double-decker stand. The club weren't very happy with it because of the poor views and went with Archibald Leitch 2 years later for the mainstand.... and subsequently also the Bullens and Gwladys St.

Magnificent photo!!!I have a feeling that may well be the Fulham 4-1 game the day we won the league in 1963,very sunny, ground looks rammed, pitch looks well worn,no semi circle behind the goal, looks like it’s half time too,ten to four on the old clock, can’t be definite but I would hedge my bets on that game😀

Loved the old semi circles behind the goal. Gave Goodison so much character IMO

Seems to me that photographs gain more impact and meaning the more time that passes between the shot being taken and the viewing. So these 1950's/60's ones are now dripping in poignancy and 'romance' (especially for Goodison nerdos like me) - I honestly believe the modern day photographs, already brilliant, will also gain impact and meaning in this way as they become increasingly distant memories, so keep taking pictures in the 34 matches that Goodison has left! :)

I've always wondered with the old park end if the terracing stayed behind the wall when it was bricked up, or if it was removed.

I'm sure someone will know...

I know they bricked it up as the rear floor was wooden, think it was an easy option for the club for segregation back then, lost its magic when it was bricked up the Park End,used to look great, then turned almost into an eyesore😞

Agree mate that blue brick wall and the shallow trench terrace looked awful. It was mostly empty towards the end aswell as there weren't many teams that would fill it
