A rs mate of mine summed it up for me after he saw him on his last trip to analfield with the barcodes
'He's not a footballer anymore, He's a racehorse owner.

Hell no. I've never been much of a fan of his. Probably would of taken him if we had to too 10 years ago but not now for whatever exhorberrant fee and wages we have to stump up.

We need the new Owen, not the old one...but id take a punt. Still got a few years left and if our youngsters cant learn from Owen/Saha/Yak teaching them the tricks then sell em all and start again.

His heart isnt in the game anymore and he's only really interested in his horses down at Malpas, that's where he spends most of his time these days.
I'd rather see someone who's not living off their reputation and with something to prove.

In a heart beat, yes!

I'd get your doctor to change your meds. The Beta blockers clearly aren't working.

I think this thread should have ended with the 'racehorse owner' jibe.

We need a striker with the pace of a thoroughbred not some old carthorse with too much money and no hunger.

Remind me who taught Owen his trick(s)?

Could it have been that other childhood blue, Robbie 'white lines' Fowler ?

A player who bloomed young, faded fast and has subsequently enjoyed such a long and successful career at the top of the property specultion ladder.
I'm sure our younger strikers will be hanging on Michael's every word as he passes on Robbie's investment tips.

Curious aside : According to Wikipedia Fowler was known as Robbie Ryder through his childhood. Given that he broke through in the wake of the 'Madchester' scene I'm wondering if there's any particular reason he didn't want to use the surname Ryder...

Why? Hes socred five goals in seven starts in the leauge this season, and one in the Carling Cup. Not a bad ratio all in all.

Ok lets not attempt to sign Englands third all time record goal scorer on a free at 28. Can we really afford not to go for Michael Owen, frankly id be dissapointed given our situation with injuries and finance not to even raise our head for him. Its intresting that people point to his injuries, as its the same situation as Saha, if he can stay fit its a no brainer!

Still dont think he will come though, would be magic if he did.

Yeah let's not. Especially as unlike Saha, Owen isn't available on a free, or on reasonable wages.

And if he is having such a momentous season (It's actually four goals in 7 starts and 4 subs) why would Newcastle want to let him go? It's not as if they have strikers to spare, have a great goalscoring record or are not staring at an ignominious relegation battle. Again.

Just accept the obvious, He might still be able to score the odd goal when he's left upfront on his own but his Owen's main concern is maximising his income as he drifts into premature retirement as he runs out of clubs unwilling to meet his ridiculous wage demands.

He's on £85k a week until next August. Given his poor injury record no club is going to offer him more than a 2 year contract and certainly not at £85k a week. Our max would be about £45k a week, so if we offered him a 2 year contract he'd effectively be playing the sceond year for free.
I can really see his agent going for that.

Magic? Yeah maybe we should hire Endora to replace Moyes.

Like i said i dont think it will happen because we cant afford him, clearly your not a fan which is grand. 85 a week is well out of our price range so thats why i beleive it wont happen.

I guess we have different opinions in terms of his ability, personally i think and still think hes very gifted. Hes been injured a lot but his games to goals ratio is better then the vast majority. Including any of our team presently. I dont think Newcastle want to let him go, its a case of possibly not having a choice given his contract situation. Yes they do have Strikers to spare about five at the last count.

Who would like to see brought in if possible in Jan mate, youve Poo Pooed Larsonn and Owen?

In other words they don't think he's worth the absurd cost of extending his contract?
It's not a question of us not being able to afford him it's simply that he is NOT good enough to warrant the level of wges he thinks he's worth.

Yes they do have Strikers to spare about five at the last count.

According to Soccernet they have seven strikers on their books but if you look closely that includes the (dis)likes of Viduka.

But then according to Soccernet we have seven as well.

I said I didn't think Larsson would be worth a half season contract, but I accepted he might be viable on a pay per play.
Generally I dislike the idea of wasting an enormous wad of money on a single player in the expectation that one new (well known) face can shore up/turn a team round. The more so when we already have a tiny squad and the players in question are clearly past their sell by dates.

I'd rather we brought in players that have the chance to make a more long term contribution to the squad and who are likely to improve themselves.
We'd have snapped up Nugent 2 years ago if he was available for £2 million and we should do the same now - assuming he's available at that price.
Otherwise if we can't afford the absurd prices being asked for players by European clubs we should be looking closer to home. Three of our first team came from Championship sides. I can't believe they are the only PL standard players in the lower leagues.

They don't - he wont sign a contract.....

And they offered him how much?

:D

BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | Newcastle | Magpies offer Owen improved deal

However, the new deal represents a pay-rise from Owen's current weekly salary of £103,000.
"Newcastle United can confirm that captain Michael Owen has been offered an extended and improved three-year contract," the statement added.
"The club hopes that this enhanced contract offer will keep him at St James' Park."
So to conclude.

Newcastle obviously want Owen to stay.

I thimk to be fair mate, its with out dispute Newcastle want him to stay. I think any club in the prem perhaps the top three and the [Poor language removed] would wnat Owen on a free. the fact we cant afford his wages i beleive is extreamly sad as a striker of his quality shoud be playing for a big club like us.

In fairnes sits hard to pick holes in a regord like this:

Years---------Club--------- App---- (Gls)

1996–2005----Liverpool---------216-----118
2004–2005----Real Madrid-------35------13
2005-Present- NewCastle Utd----54------22

1998-Present--England----------89------40
