Its not my sport but it looked to me the french rider took one racing line. Pidcock rode into the other. And then the french rider turned into pidcock when he realised he was about to pass. Im guessing bit like F1. If the racing line is there.
But as someone above stated. He beat him even after getting a puncture. The way he clawed that back must have been demoralizing.
But fk the french.
That was up there as good as anything ive seen in the olympics ever.

Constant duels and swimming back and forth, you really need condition and body strength.
I played few amateur summer tournaments and was dead after like 5 minutes of it.

No wonder they all look built as Greek Gods.
