Ha, I played a charity game at goodison about 8-9 years ago and when I turned up, Psycho Pat was starting at centre half with me. He started the game, waited 10 mins, bent someone in half with a tackle and then subbed himself with a smile on his face and never came back on 😀

Disagree mate, but respectfully so.
Granted football has changed over the years ,tactically , and expectations of defenders playing out from the back.
In my view, all that back four could have adapted to the modern game.

No thats totally fair mate. Its all opinions. Doesnt mean i didnt think he was top draw. One of the best defenders ive ever seen was Franco Baresi. He was hardly silky smooth either. But try and get past him and score.
Ratcliffe had a rapid burst of speed over 10/20 yards that often got him out of trouble. Another sliding doors moment at the club that could have been oh so different. I think he was left back under kendall early on and not setting the world alight. Could have quite easly moved on.
Switched him to the centre. And the rest as they say.

There was a training video I saw the other week and it had Beto and others doing finishing drills from crosses. After a few of them, I clocked onto the fact that they were fantastic crosses coming into the box, but the crosser was never on camera until right at the end. I probably don't need to tell you who it was.
Glad to see Charlie Adam is finally earning his wage.

I think the point is he didn't in the eighties, but times have changed. Reidy would have been sent off a lot more these days for what was considered an honest tackle back then.

To answer the question, Baines all day long for me, clearly our best left back in my lifetime, him and Pienaar a great combination, closest thing in my time watching was Mike Pejic and Dave Thomas. Van den Hauwe was a good defender, but Baines had everything.
Reid would have adapted to the times. A very smart player. I was only thinking that I would love him and Gray back today just for their shear can do mentality. Gray of course being no slouch in the ability stakes too.

Anyway, still with Baines of the two. Still not sure that they would get into an all time Everton side with Wilson around.

Reid's mentality was brilliant and it was him(on the pitch) that drove Everton forward.
There were a few key signings back then. Id put him up there near the top.

I might have Reid as my favourite player. Just for that alone. Little did I realise as a kid how important that is.

To bring it back on thread topic, I actually think that both Van der Hauwe and Baines have that quality - it's just that Van der Hauwe's was out on show, but the steel running through Baines's game was of a quieter less showy kind and I still have a hunch that we will see it as I have him down as Moyes's successor.

I grew up and idolised Southall and Sharp in that side. I went everywhere following Everton and those two always just seemed Everton to me.
As ive got older i realise and appreciate just how good Reid was. And how important.
