Most Windows 10 system lock-ups are GPU driver related. Manually download and install the latest driver for your GPU. Also as someone else suggested, CCleaner by Piriform is a good maintenance app especially effective for cleaning your registry.
My son network engineer swears by C Cleaner;)

It's actually MS Office that crashes mine, but not rebooting tends to increase the likelihood. Plus, my MBP is ~5 years old and probably needs replacement.

What OS Version are you running. I'm stuck on Mavericks due to the VPN software we use at work. MS doesn't crash the OS for me, Safari crashes every week or two though.

Try running a disk repair and a permissions repair from recovery mode. That should fix your OS crashing issues

I have Win 7, and Win 10 kept trying to load itself onto my PC. I managed to prevent it, and finally found something that stops it from trying to download itself without your acceptance. I printed off the advice and have scanned it. Here it is below. OP, if you had Win 7 and can restore it, I would strongly suggest following the route described below. First line at the end reads 'Never check' (never was in red, so didn't come out good in the b&w scanning). This is advice given by a techie to people who use him for repairs, etc.. WU = Weekly Updates (sorry if you already know that). Hope this helps in some way.

I use IoBit for that and find it fine.

I've repaired permissions a few times (they're always off, but I don't understand why). Running Office 2011 (14.6.5) on Yosemite (10.10.5). If I remember correctly, Office 2008 wasn't this bad, except that Entourage was complete trash. Rarely have any problems with Outlook, but it's Word and Excel that crash if I leave them open.
