At school I wrote to a French boy called Joel and a German girl called Rita. No idea what became of them. The letters fizzled out.

In later years I corresponded with a bloke on Death Row at San Quentin. Long story but it came after I watched a program about called 14 Days In May about a young man who was executed on some very dodgy evidence. And before you ask no, I'm not one of these weirdos who is sexually attracted to prisoners and who wants to marry them. I did it through a charitable organisation and I figure that everybody needs a friend. Once again the embedded Catholic upbringing surfaced and the story about the sheep and the goats - which actually is how I try to live my life.

What had the fella done to be on death row or weren't you allowed to know ?.

I saw an episode of Peppa Pig recently where her French pen pal turned up on the doorstep with most of her belongings, just for a weekend stay. All very weird and you could tell that Daddy pig clearly has a hatred of the French.

He murdered somebody. He had had a horrific upbringing, his mother was an alcoholic who neglected him, he had a low IQ(possibly caused by his mother drinking heavily whilst pregnant) and personality disorders. He started drinking and using drugs when he was 9. None of which makes what he did right of course. His death sentence was overturned on appeal last year after he had been on death row since 1992.

It made me think of Pen Pals at school when were only little Friends. I had someone in Peru to write to I think when I was about 10 as a class project, probably all badly Yewtree.

Oh yes.

To this day the phrase "Par Avion" makes me think of exotic places like.......Atlanta, GA., Des Moines, IA and places in Africa

Our school used to organise exchange letters with schools in other countries.

When the internet came along I googled then got in touch with one of my former open pen pals in the States....she is very well known in Geology circles and something if an academic.

I loved those blue envelopes that folded out so you could write your letter then fold it back again......and it had Par Avion written in the corner

A note for the teenagers.....Par Avion means "by air" or "air mail" and that was letters delivered at warp speed in those days, by plane, as opposed to our version of snail mail, going on the Mail boat
