Joe Royle delivered that trophy.

He got this club out of the abyss and back into europe somehow after the disaster of 1994.

He should've been that decade's Moyes but wasn't backed and walked and then things went wrong very quickly again.

FA cup win was no vindication at all for boardroom competency at the time, quite the opposite.
We got Joe five years too late. Certainly, he should have been the man when Kendall returned. By then, his Oldham were a power in the land. As it was, we simply got the last sting of a dying wasp from Joe. But what a sting!

RIP Hamperman.

Aside from the cup win and selling Dunc behind the managers back, he also oversaw some massive PR and commercial blunders. Anyone remember the red season tickets, trying to Jib off Z Cars, the 97-98 kit not being royal blue, the 95 cup final ticket fiasco etc etc.

My abiding memory though is him literally being chased out the club when that lid jumped on his car after he drove off and it being shown on sky sports 🤣

I just remember that this was the time our supporters realised that the board were quite prepared to watch the club get relegated and they sat on their hands and watched it. That kendall team was the worst team ive seen and the only reason we stayed up was the backing the supporters gave the team. Our attendances went up and ever since have risen to the extent that we now have a massive waiting list and a full ground every home game. It was then when our support who had always been there realised just what the club meant to them and if they just sit back and do nothing the club will suffer. The only thing we can do is turn up every week. Its us against them. Its the same today. Johnson ran the club badly. Kenwright ran the club the same way but for longer. Pair of *****.

With regards to our managers in the 90's, it's a shame Peter Reid never got a chance to manage Everton. He sure would've done a better job than Mike Walker anyway!

Bringing Howard back for a second and third stint as manager were mistakes. Walter Smith though did an alright job considering the circumstances imo.

Peter Reid would have been perfect for us in 97 or 98 imo. He did a fantastic job at Sunderland around that time. Instead we chased Andy Gray who binned us for a better offer from Sky!

Really the last truly great chairman we had was Sir Phillip Carter back in the 80's. That's the reason why this club has suffered such a dramatic fall from grace imo.

Oh well with new owners and the new stadium, then that should hopefully lead to an improvement in fortunes further down the line.

Gray was a weird approach. He was fully committed to Sky and basically used the job offer to get a big bumper new deal off Sky. Would be like RS desperate to get in Hansen from BBC at same time.

From what I remember Sir Bobby Robson was the main target as he'd just been moved upstairs by Barca and his Newcastle spell a few years later showed he'd have been a really good choice. Think John Toshack's name was also floating, would've been more divisive for obvious reasons but again he was a very good manager in those times and would manage Real Madrid 18 months later.

Those moves all fell through and so Kendall was the desperate fall back option which I think everyone early on that season knew was the wrong move.

As i said earlier Johnson was doing a good job until he started to run out of cash.

He did more good for this club in his five year tenure as chairman, than anything that Kenwright did in his almost quarter of a century reign as chairman of this club.

Vindication or not mate a trophy did arrive at Goodison while Peter Johnson was our chairman. Johnson wasn't chairman when we avoided relegation in 1994 as well.
broke our transfer record a couple
of times under him early on i think

Yeah Bobby Robson would have been fantastic. HK was a poor choice but credit to him for coming to us, as seemingly nobody else would touch us in that summer of 97.

Also remember all the players we were linked with that summer. Ince, Ravenelli etc only to end up with Gareth Farrelly and Danny Williamson 🤦‍♂️
