Top defender, top player, top lad on and off the pitch, fine captain and no showmaker. Everton style.

I will cry the day when he retires.

Sums it up perfectly!

As was said at the time of lescotts 24M sale to city (luckily for us)

"They have not bought the best defender in the league, he's not even the best defender at Everton"

Love that Quote!! Shame some here talk down on him due to him not being a shouting, Pointing type of captain.

Tbf I thought he was done for at the beginning of last season....surely has turned it around

He played at goodison for Sheffield utd and he was my MOM that day.

I told my mate we should sign him and was glad we did. Was he not played as a defensive midfielder originally? .

Great player.

He's finished though, right @davek my friend?
Nothing but a back up, at very best?
Wait until he has his customary and extended walkabout period in the season, passing the ball to opposition forwards and getting caught under the ball.

You have to be switched on for 38 games, not 28. That's no good to anyone.

I'll defend Jags by saying that the period that happened last season was when he was playing alongside either Distin or Alcaraz. Not an excuse, but after that he really sorted his act out, and him and Stones are superb together as a pairing and compliment each other perfectly.

He's done it in previous seasons though. He's careless with the ball at his feet and cant concentrate for 100% of the time.

We need competition in that department and Martinez needs to get hold of a very good CB to play alongside Stones if need be.

The thing is, he's a lot more liable to a lapse in concentration when he has the ball at his feet all the time - e.g. when he played alongside Distin for the last few seasons. Not to knock Distin, but he was dreadful on the ball, which means that most of the play went through Jags. With Stones, a lot more of the play goes through him.

Also, really good CBs are very hard to come by and eve more expensive to buy. I definitely think he'll get someone in who represents competition for the main two, but I highly doubt this player will come in and knock Jags out of the team. People like to slate him, and people like to overestimate him. Regardless, he's a very good defender who still has another 2 years in him at this level, and I'd have him down as one of the first names on the team sheet.

Well, we've seen two CBs go, so we're short there. Browning looked good yesterday, but it's asking a lot to step straight into the PL during the season - not impossible but difficult and, therefore, undesirable.

It's not right that because Jagielka happens to wear the armband (and we can have another debate about how fit he is to wear it) he doesn't face competition. If he's in poor form - out he goes. That's the only way to run a team. No grace and no favour.

Jagielka has been brilliant for us and I see no reason why he can't carry on with us for another 2 - 3 seasons as first choice cb.

That goal though...

I'm a little less damning of Jags generally but this ^^^ is imperative for the future. Any player can have a bad game and shouldn't necessarily play with the fear that one mistake will see them benched for six months, but no player should expect to be selected after a run of 5-10 poor performances - there absolutely has to be the understanding that competition is strong enough in every area of the pitch for no single position to be guaranteed.

I think this was a problem with a few of the lads last season: Coleman, Jags, Howard, Lukaku, even Baines and to a lesser extent McCarthy all went through periods of poor form without being dropped. It's not that they have the attitude that they don't need to worry or care, exactly, but the psychological effect of knowing it's highly unlikely your place is under threat can be slowly corrosive to one's performance.

In the case of Jags, hopefully the development of Browning and Galloway (plus a senior CB coming in) will give him enough focus. At his best he's in the top tier of CBs in the league.
