Phil Jagielka

Holgate should arguably starting games based on his form this season. He's every bit as good as Mori, possibly even better. That, for me, puts Jagielka 4th choice and highly unlikely or deserving of starting between now and end of the season. Time to part ways and wish him the best.

I felt for a while that Jags may have been part of the current problem.

Not him as such, just that he is a reminder of all what we want to move away from.

May be harsh, and I have really liked Jags and the level we was at, he was a decent leader, good player and loyal to us.

I agree mate, the partnership of jags and Lescott was cut far too early IMO, rivalled Rio and Vidic - no exaggeration.

Unfortunately Jags is not a captain, he lacks that extra bite needed to drag your team forward, when he loses it hurts him as it does us, but he will never have the ability to turn that loss into revenge - the top players very rarely lose twice.

Even in his interviews it was always things like 'we go back onto the training pitch and put it right', sometimes said for weeks on end after a poor run. Just never strikes me as being a warrior or snarler. See Mirallas against West Ham as example, compared to Baines, McCarthy and Coleman.

I don't think Jags deserves too much criticism - he's been a very good player for us and his record is top drawer. One of the best signs of a really good centre half is the number of bookings which, before this season was barely a dozen or so in 300 odd games. He's now lost that half-yard (though he was still on his game against Arsenal).

And then of course.. that goal at The Pit.

Agree with everything bar the part in bold. He was bobbins against Arsenal - the second yellow was a litany of errors. He got his positioning all wrong, which meant he had to try to recover with the pace he no longer has. He compounded the first two errors by committing the obvious foul after he'd been beaten for pace, which left the ref with absolutely no choice whatsoever.

A great servant who has given years of very good performances to the club... but he hasn't been elite for several years now and there are better options in the squad. Let him stay as backup to see out his contract and then get him a role elsewhere in the club.

Wonderful moment that the fraud got piped right down. Probably the most enjoyable moment of his tenure.

Definitely. When he has had his chance he has been awful and the other players seem to lose confidence as well, good defender in his day but his time is up plus Holgate has looked class in every game he's played.

Let's be honest though Holgate got schooled in the cup against Norwich when he played as a CB in a two. He's very good at RB or in a three but he's not so good we can retire Jags now. Williams and Jags are the only CBs on the books who can play in a 2 man defence currently. I don't trust Funes Mori or Holgate there yet. Hopefully Koeman continues with a back three.
