Phil Jagielka

I'll state my case,

1. Jags is two years younger than Terry (not 1)

2. We are not as good as Chelsea
Jagielka is 35 next month. What the hell has that got to do with it?
We're an aspiring CL club.

When a player like John Terry is dropping down a division and he is miles better than Jagielka, that should give a big hint to Jagielka's current standing in the game.

John Terry is a king sized bellend. Jags is a top man, there's room for him on the bench or other comps.
Bell or not, the man is a winner and Jagielka is a poor captain who has won nothing with us.
I'd rather have John Terry than Jagielka in the squad.

John Terry has made the decision to drop down a division, players like Gary Neville and Carragher retired around the same age. Jagielka should do the decent thing and leave a club that is trying to push on.

Can't believe the lack of respect being shown to one of our best players of the PL era. He's under contract still! Why on earth should be he harried out? If he can't still do a job for us then he just won't get the game time, but neither Jags nor Koeman are fools, and they'll have had discussions about what realistic amount of football he can expect this season.

If only some of our other players would show the same sort of loyalty as Jags. Would love to see him play some role for us when he finally hangs up his boots, whereever that turns out to be.

20 months age gap, and its relevant for same same reason you brought up the age difference to start with.

Terry has said himself he had offers from the premier league but couldn't face playing against Chelsea.

I'm under no illusion Jagielka is amazing but he's been a loyal servant and I think will still offer something to squad rotation and certain Europa games.

I hope he goes as it will be sad seeing him limited to occasionally playing for us when if he droppped down a level maybe even just a mid table club in Premier he could be a regular starter.

We need to hang on to Jags at least until January and not for his ability on a football pitch. With all these incomings & outgoings it's extremely important to keep some continuity at the club. We need senior players who have spent a few years here to settle the new guys in.

New signings in the past have often given interviews about how Jags helped them get to know people and made them feel welcome. He's a good lad our Jags. Give him a break.

This is what worries me.

The squad of players that have been here for years haven't got a backbone between them, don't want that continuing into new players who are buying into this ambitious project.

We all saw what happened this season, couple of injuries and he becomes a key part of our team again. It's lucky we still had him at that point.

If we do get another top CB then it may be time to move on but I think he deserves to call when it's time.

I think Koeman has shown himself to be very astute, if he wants to hang on to Jags for a while longer and Jags is happy to stay then so be it.
We owe Jags respect, he has been a good servant to Everton, if all our players gave as much as him we would be in a much healthier position.

Yeah, exactly. Astonishes me how short-sighted people are in pushing for him to be moved on. He won't be first choice but he's great to provide cover and continuity. If he hasn't had any game time come January and he feels he wants more football then that would be the time for him to move on.

I agree with this, I suspect he will make the decision to go sooner unless Koeman convinces him that he will get some game time, Europe, cups etc.

Jags has been great. Solid pro, decent performer, great at his peak. He may not have been the best on-field captain but I bet he was a role model to the younger lads and he never had any off the field problems.

BUT... he is now on the way down.

I understand people saying we should show more respect etc etc. In a way those people are right. Shouts of "bin him off" and "get rid asap" are not needed.

However, in recent years EFC have had a bad habit (in my opinion) of keeping players way too long. I'm thinking the likes of Weir Stubbs Neville Distin Hibbert Osman Howard etc. we always have to keep these players (who were all decent, not great, but decent in their day) one season too long.

To the point where they are still playing for us and everyone can see they are past it. They are too slow, making bad decisions, getting abuse from the fans, and every week the manager has to spend time in post match interviews deflecting, ducking the issue and this only makes things worse. The fans know they are finished and so does the manager and the player himself. But they won't admit they were wrong to offer the new bumper deal and the player has too much pride to admit he can no longer cut it. This in turn makes the fans question the manager's eye for a player and the player's professionalism. The deflected questions also make the fans feel they're being taken for mugs.

This often leads to a sour ending. The fans are simply glad the player is gone. Not bothered about the replacement, just glad the player is no longer available to be picked by the manager. The player will also remember the club less fondly which has a knock on effect when he is working in the media (giving little jibes where he can) or in management ("don't go to EFC the fans are a nightmare").

In short I feel now would be the perfect time for Jags to move on. He'd be remembered as a good guy who did well for us in times where we couldn't compete with the big boys because of financial restraints. In my opinion he should go back to shef united, his home town club and be a hero once more, in a league where he'd still boss it. Rather than a bit part squad player on the decline.

What also must be remembered (as stated a few posts ago) while he was a good player, he was part of a side that always seemed to lack the drive, snide and determination to win a game when it really mattered. I'm thinking cup games, derbies, prem games away to big sides when key points were at stake. In recent years this has been like a disease at Everton. To stop this mentality we need to get rid of anyone who thinks mediocrity is ok. I'm not saying this is all Jag's fault, it isn't, but as captain and a key player during these years he has to take his share of the responsibility.
