As some of the longer term members know, we've had long-running discussions about the merits of political threads on GOT as they tend to result in disagreements and in-fighting amongst Blues.

They, and other similarly 'hot' topics, do tend to be discussed however, so we're going to trial putting them all into the upgraded member lounge, where moderation is more relaxed on account of it being primarily used by members who have shown a willingness to support the site.

Threads that will be put there include topics such as politics, religion, guns and so on. Any existing threads on these topics will be moved over to the upgraded lounge by Sunday evening.

On a serious note, it's a shame, look at the basic income thread for an example of an interesting and insightful thread from posters on both sides of the politic spectrum.

Keep it in the open, I say. The vast majority of posting on the political threads is inoffensive and some of it is positively insightful and illuminating.

Its more along the lines that the amount of grief political threads cause us, and the amount of aggression/point scoring/roundabout arguements they create make us question if they are suitable for a football forum.

It's not a football forum to many of us - it's a community. We're united by Everton and -occasionally - we may cross swords but it rarely gets nasty and I think it adds to the board, overall, rather than detract. Genuinely saddened by this decision. I know I'll spend less time here.*

It's an experiment Clint. As has been said elsewhere, there are numerous topics that in the many years GOT has been open have often 'gone bad' and so they are, officially at least, banned, in large part because this is a community of Blues and we want to be bound by that rather than divided by things that are unrelated.

But, people do want to discuss these things, so it's a trial to place those discussions in a part of the site that is more relaxed in its moderation where people enter at their own risk.

If it doesn't work, then it can be reassessed. I'm sure you have nothing against trying things out

Very disappointing. As others have said, politics is a major part of life and I thought suited the Ale House forum well. I've learned an awful lot in those political threads, and had some excellent debates with people I wouldn't never usually speak with.

More seriously, I'm a bit sad about this, it is a known fact of life that politics and religion are best discussed in the pub. I enjoy reading the political threads especially when our non UK based GOTers offer their opinions. It doesn't often descend into hostility and to be honest the "last film you watched" or "what are you listening to" threads are fleetingly interesting but not great attention holders.

And although I joked about your shameless marketing - there may be some who genuinely cannot afford to part with the required dosh to upgrade. I'm with @Clint Planet on this one.
