As some of the longer term members know, we've had long-running discussions about the merits of political threads on GOT as they tend to result in disagreements and in-fighting amongst Blues.

They, and other similarly 'hot' topics, do tend to be discussed however, so we're going to trial putting them all into the upgraded member lounge, where moderation is more relaxed on account of it being primarily used by members who have shown a willingness to support the site.

Threads that will be put there include topics such as politics, religion, guns and so on. Any existing threads on these topics will be moved over to the upgraded lounge by Sunday evening.

Haha, to an extent, but I'm kinda seeing it more that people who have supported the site hopefully have its best interests at heart and so will post sensibly. Like I said to Clint, it's an experiment. If it doesn't work, we can reassess.
That's fine, like I said it's your site you make the rules!

I locked it because it was 1,000+ pages of people in the blue corner entrenched in their views, shouting at those in the red corner entrenched in their views. I'd also read a couple of studies showing that people become more entrenched, the more they discuss things on fora like this, so it generally seemed a waste of time.

You locked it because studies said discussing things makes you entrenched in a political view?

If argue the absolute opposite and suggest that if you don't discuss political matters then you will never learn the points of view of others which may inform what you believe yourself. There have been loads of instances when people have posted to say how much they value those kind of threads because they have learned so many things they didn't know.

He locked it because you have to pay to view or contribute to stuff like that now, he's admitted it himself.

At the end of the day it's up to the mods what threads are allowed, they have to police the nonsense.

It seems witch-hunts, borderline bullying and unfunny multi's are what they want on here instead of grown up discussion on a variety of topics!

Some would have you lock @davek

I'm afraid that last bit is a long way wide of the mark, and I've posted to just that effect in the members lounge this evening. We've also had a great many discussions in mod central about these things. Believe it or not, this is an experiment designed to reduce conflict on the site.

Why reduce conflict ? Isn't that's what life is about ? differing opinions, points of view etc - appreciate the task mods have but reducing it to anodyne threads where we all agree is not the way forward imo ... I agree with davek on a lot of his political opinions but not on some EFC matters - so we agree to disagree and if it becomes personal then take appropriate action...

(He loves a study, does Bruce. Makes him feel more well-informed than everyone else)

Ergo - never allow anyone, anywhere to discuss anything, ever, in any way. Jesus H Christ, is this what we've come to as a species?

Sweet baby [insert culturally significant person here].

Anyway - anyone seen any amusingly shaped vegetables lately?

No offence but you know that reports will decrease with this arrangement. This isnt experiment but a calculated move. A bit dissapointed here.

Also - who decides what's political? Would threads about the NHS, foodbanks, the education system be classed as political. How about the "another shooting in America" thread?

Good luck with those calls mods.

That is a good point, and one we are juggling with. Hence the experimental term in the UGL where this can be thrashed out in comfort.
