As some of the longer term members know, we've had long-running discussions about the merits of political threads on GOT as they tend to result in disagreements and in-fighting amongst Blues.

They, and other similarly 'hot' topics, do tend to be discussed however, so we're going to trial putting them all into the upgraded member lounge, where moderation is more relaxed on account of it being primarily used by members who have shown a willingness to support the site.

Threads that will be put there include topics such as politics, religion, guns and so on. Any existing threads on these topics will be moved over to the upgraded lounge by Sunday evening.

We try and act in the interests of the whole community. As I've said before, politics is banned on a great many fora precisely because of the nature of discussions, and we've had that in the rules from the very start of GOT. Since that time it's oscillated between a relaxation of those rules>bust ups>tightening of rules and so on at fairly regular intervals. As we have a part of the site that is designed to have more relaxed moderation and is therefore a bit more 'enter at own risk', it seems a natural place to try putting something that has so vexed us for so long.

These threads never change the world, or by and large even one anothers opinions, so 'working' is probably best defined as having fewer bust ups between members.

The upgraded lounge is largely moderator free. I can't imagine anyone would be banned from a thread for posting something a mod disagreed with.

To be fair, that's largely due to it bring poster free, too

Also, if it may not work well and be reinstated or scrapped forever soon, that's not a great incentive for people to upgrade if they can afford it.

Again, as I've said several times before, people shouldn't look at it that way. If you want to support the site financially, then you do so because you want to support the site financially. It does cost a lot to keep the place running, and it's done largely in the spare time of all who do so, so your support is very much appreciated.

As a token of thanks, we give you a mug, and a place that has relaxed moderation, which given the history of political threads seems an ideal place for such topics to be discussed.

To reiterate, by the strict rules of the site, political threads shouldn't be allowed on here as it is, so you shouldn't sign up here under the expectation that you'll be having political discussions. This is an Everton forum :)

I do change my opinion occasionally, only fools think they are always right.

I think this is a tad unfair on those that love Everton as much as anyone, come on here for a bit of banter, but simply can't afford to pay.
A lot of nice people on here, I hope they don't dig their heels in and leave because of this.

Again though, in the rules that are visible when everyone registers, political discussions are not allowed on here, so I'm not sure why they would be a motivation for someone signing up. We exist for Hibbert, not Putin.

There are plenty of forums devoted to politics for those that want to discuss such things.
I welcome the idea, because I spend half my time on here trying desperately not to get into political debates,

Many people are though and that's the problem.

I have never, ever had an issue with how this place is moderated but this is just odd.

I know Bruce, before I had a child I was a member. Said child ended that (and the mug) in short order.

I very much doubt many people sign-up here to discuss politics, we're all football fans, some who also like to discuss current affairs together.
Have you actually tried to recruit a suitable mod. ?
