As discussed here, we've today started trialling a new post rate system.

Previously members could 'Like' a post. Now, they can 'Like' or 'Dislike' ('KOF') a post. Those who have been posting for a while will remember it being similar to the rep system, but without the ability to comment.

The developers reckon it;

  • Increases daily posts.
  • Improves signal to noise ratio; less short/unnecessary posts
  • Improves quality of posts (posters want to avoid negative ratings)
  • Makes lurkers useful for something and gives them a means of interaction
And, it can help self moderate - there's a setting that allows 'x' amount of dislikes to place a post in a moderation queue.

We'll be tweaking the system over the next week or two to see if it can work. Be mindful that if we notice people taking the piss with it (targeting members etc) then we'll revoke access and it'll be a mark in the against category for the feature...

Personally, I've never been a fan of it. Seems to me, if you disagree with something, you have four options:

1) Write a reply saying why you disagree
2) Ignore it, either using the ignore function or just not replying
3) Sending a report to us if you think the user has overstepped the mark
4) Hitting dislike

I'm not really sure what gap #4 fills that the other three don't cover.
Fair enough, a lot of posters wanted it to return though so plenty disagree.

It's self moderation. I think the first few days will be a bad sample as people are going to town on it right now, but if you're willing to accept positive reinforcements of your post, you should be able to accept the negative too. I speak as a man who features highly on that neg list.

Yes of course, no issue with that. I thought the gripe was about not being able to secretly have a go at the poster via the neg rep comment line.

Typically, if you like something, then you bear the same opinion, so usually no need to respond. If you dislike something, then why not say why, get some discussion going?
This makes sense until the poster you disagree with is someone like an Ash/Adversus/Zatara/FCBarca type.

Las thing a lot of people want is to further the discussion about dangerous pie tins.

Just checked, I've made 32 negs since yesterday.

Excessive?

I've given over 41 thousand likes - not the same timescale obviously but a bit of perspective here wouldn't go amiss.

There's positives.
There's negatives.

I thought the first post in this thread highlighted them pretty clearly.

If it works, great.
It it doesn't, we'll remove it.

We have an environment that readily allows for practice > theory.

Theory said the current affairs forum wouldn't work, but hey ho.

The start hasn't been great, too many reports and conversations - I'm hoping that's just a reaction to change - whenever we do anything people on here moan as well as a bit of excitement over a new toy.

But it's staying for two weeks. So ride it out.

If it gets binned, I lose £20 spent on the plugin, an hour of my time to set it up/remove and some pride.

Whatever happens, nobody can cry and say we don't give things a test.

To be fair though, as a proportion of the total userbase, the number of people that love negging is low (just as is the number of people that use it). Is it really representative?

When does self-moderation slip over into vigilantism?
