As discussed here, we've today started trialling a new post rate system.

Previously members could 'Like' a post. Now, they can 'Like' or 'Dislike' ('KOF') a post. Those who have been posting for a while will remember it being similar to the rep system, but without the ability to comment.

The developers reckon it;

  • Increases daily posts.
  • Improves signal to noise ratio; less short/unnecessary posts
  • Improves quality of posts (posters want to avoid negative ratings)
  • Makes lurkers useful for something and gives them a means of interaction
And, it can help self moderate - there's a setting that allows 'x' amount of dislikes to place a post in a moderation queue.

We'll be tweaking the system over the next week or two to see if it can work. Be mindful that if we notice people taking the piss with it (targeting members etc) then we'll revoke access and it'll be a mark in the against category for the feature...

Im not sure how many ive made Bruce, if there was any you had in mind I would be very happy to share my thought process on them if you could highlight them.

Several hundred have been made in the past 12 hours, and we've (the mods) received more reports in that time than we have over the past week. I'm just not sure how they contribute to the forum. If you disagree with what someone has written, say why in the forum.

That certainly seems excessive, ive just recently removed a few people from ignore, peoples whos views I really dont share, maybe I should pop them back to remedy this.

See above Bruce, I dont like cluttering threads up with petty fights, hence I suppose me taking the easy way out with the koff.

But I have taken onboard your concerns.

So what you're saying is people have filed a report because an internet stranger has pressed a digital thumbs down icon?

I think that's the early novelty of having neg rep back. It will even out over time.

A response does not have to be a petty fight. It is the genesis of discussion.

So what you're saying is you don't want us to use the thumbs down option?

Isn't the whole point to not clutter up threads?

Just for balance, how many likes were made in the same period and are you aiming for a certain ratio of likes/koffs?

It's the same complaints we had with the previous incarnations of rep.

Nothing to see here.

Personally, I've never been a fan of it. Seems to me, if you disagree with something, you have four options:

1) Write a reply saying why you disagree
2) Ignore it, either using the ignore function or just not replying
3) Sending a report to us if you think the user has overstepped the mark
4) Hitting dislike

I'm not really sure what gap #4 fills that the other three don't cover.

Do you not like posts as gesture of your agreement or respect?

If so then why not dislike in the opposite scenario?
Yes of course, no issue with that. I thought the gripe was about not being able to secretly have a go at the poster via the neg rep comment line.

Typically, if you like something, then you bear the same opinion, so usually no need to respond. If you dislike something, then why not say why, get some discussion going?

It's a quick gauge of board opinion. A mini-poll for every post, if you will. It's not that you're offended by the post, but that you disagree with the content.

But I agree that if you dislike, the next step ought to be to discuss it.
