Not a clue about live music but if you want decent ale and avoid all the town knobheads then just stick on or around Dale Street.

Thomas Rigbys (shares a decent outdoor area with the lady of mann if the weather is nice), Denbigh Castle, The Railway on the corner up from Moorfields. They'll get busy but not rammed.

Can't stand Mathew st myself @Blueclouds , its concert square for fatties.

If it is kind of a date night head to somewhere decent like baltic fleet or Papillion. Later on Cafe Petit does nice cocktails, good vibe and lately has had brilliant live jazz musicians playing

Thank you for a serious answer. Yeah I'm only popping into the cavern club for 2 hours for music then just looking for a nice chilled place.

Ship and Mitre or other fine establishments along there. The Red Lion, on Slater Street, is fairly decent too if you're on the other side of town.

Sounds like heading to Dale Street is the answer after the cavern Club instead of ruby blues.

If you're looking for a pub without blaring music, telly or fruit machines try the Roscoe Head. Decent ale, and weather permitting, you can sit outside. Like pubs used to be.

The Denbigh is another good pub around Dale Street: good ale; brilliant relaxed atmosphere; Dom the landlord is great and it's a blue pub.
