Disagree.
This was the 04-06 generation.
James, Neville, Terry, Campbell, Cole,
Beckham, Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard, Owen, Rooney.
Look at that defence. Later on Ferdinand would join them. Campbell and Cole were both on the invincibles. Terry didnt lose a home game in three years....
Rooney in his prime is worth three Harry Kanes...
All of them were world class in their position. Owen and James aside, all of them competed in at least one champions league final as a starter.
The bench was nothing to scoff at either.

Maybe it's because there was/is too much internal rivalry and a reluctance to go deep for the country. Talent was never the problem.

Talent has never been the problem. The structure was. As in, there wasnt one. But when St Georges Park was built, a "Club England" began to emerge, ironically, largely involving Southgate, which began the slow process of building that ethos.

I am sure all of those ^^^^ players represented England through the age groups, but at random training grounds and no real structure underpinning it/them.

I believe France is going to win it again, and have done since the the group stage.

That England gave them a decent game, came back from a goal down (rather than folding) and for periods were the better team with the scoreline/chances very close I think deserves praise. Bellingham score that lovely shot, a few cm to the right for Maguire’s header, Kane doesn’t sky his 2nd penalty - one of those and at the least the game would have gone to extra time.

If France perform poorly from now on I will probably reassess but for now I believe they got knocked out by the eventual winners rather than “first good team they met”.
Fair points mate, but the only team i can make excuses for and feel very strongly about is Everton. England getting beaten was a millionth of how I felt after the Bournemouth games lol

Its a real shame if you think about it.
Going back to the late seventies and early eighties....
Liverpool (4 times) Nottingham Forest (twice and Aston Villa all won the European Cup. We won the CWC, Ipswich and Tottenham won the UEFA Cup, Surely I'm forgetting about others ..
All that success at clublevel with largely English players... yet Belgium managed to do more on the international level in that period than England. (One WC semi and one EC final).

Largely British players when you think about it. Not gonna pretend I recall the Villa and Spurs squads back then, but the RS, us, Ipswich, Forest all had significant non English players.

Thats why the youth structure now in play in England is so important. PL is about 30% English?? So get them inducted into a Club England culture as youngsters, with its one centre, committed coaches, throughout the age groups.

Lots of young talent in England right now.
As a neutral, I enjoyed watching England during this World Cup. Saka and Bellingham in particular are brilliant players.
In the long term, a strong replacement for Henderson is needed and a successor to Kane. I’m not sure who that would be. Abraham? Toney?
Kane is streets ahead of his rival strikers. Can’t see where this replacement is.

English clubs were lucky back then as British players were not classed as 'non nationals'. There was a rule where clubs could only field three non nationals, this started to change in the early 90s iirc. The rs had very few English players in the mid 80s

Dont remember that. I do remember UEFA doing sommet for the CL which lasted a season or 2.

The had one who started the 86 cup final, Craig Johnson, who was from South Africa. I suppose Lawrenson was technically English.

It wasn’t a dig by the way, I just don’t see how they can be classed as one of the major nations when they’ve only won 1 trophy in their history. Undoubtedly they are a top 10 team but I don’t consider them to be classed in the same bracket as Brazil, Argentina, Germany or France.
I think he's saying 'major footballing nation' in the context of football in general in England. Not a major footballing national team. Which as you rightly point out, we're not.
