So I have recently stopped drinking alcohol altogether and am actually concerned with how hard it is. I never considered any kind of dependence on it because I never thought about drinking. We would enjoy a beer or two while grilling or some wine with dinner which never seemed like a bad thing.

I have recently just stopped with it all and it's been rather hard. No red wine with steak, no beer with a cheeseburger, etc. It scares me a bit. Has anyone gone through this?

I do it for a month at a time and at the end I note how ace I feel, then I go and pickle my liver again. Too many of mates drink so I'm sucked in by that and a weak resolve.

Good luck though, like anything pretty much the body is just about creating habits.

are you really a pilot?

Just don't buy it. No problem. Don't go down those aisles at the supermarket.
Don't put yourself in situations where a drink is the norm. First few weeks will be difficult as it's still fresh and on your mind. Social situations are the hardest to stay off it. Make your friends aware that you're determined to quit and they wont, or at least shouldn't if they're good friends, pressure you to have 'just the one'

I managed pubs once upon a time and was drinking daily. Not heavily just every day. At least 4 pints a day, every day, and a couple of shorts too. Walked away from the industry completely as I could see it, the drinking, becoming more and more prevalent in life and decided it wasn't for me. Barely drink at all now. When I go the match is the only 'regular' drink I have and even then it's only two or three bottles at most.

Best of luck.

I think that's his point tbf. It's almost impossible to give up completely because it's such a standard presence in social situations which, in turn, are hard to avoid.

@ItsOKImAPilot, was there some incident that gave you this epiphany? Because It sounds to me like you're a very moderate drinker, which should be perfectly fine. Just because we probably can't go without something doesn't qualify it as a dependence, I like chocolate but I don't go from Mars bar to Mars bar to get me through the day

Being told that I had high blood pressure in my 30s made me completely stop. I actually packed in smoking and drinking on the same day 8 years ago. If I walk down the drink isle now with the Mrs I might as well be walking down the paint section at B&Q. I have zero compulsion to taste alcohol. In fact, if anything it repulses me now.

Booze isn't a requirement for a happy healthy life. I don't miss the wasted weekends or the feelings of depression which often accompanied a hangover.

Yerh done it for a year once
One thing to look out for is massively increased sugar cravings - alcohol is loaded with sugar and without it yoj'll find yourself craving sweets a lot

I'd also suggest drawing a massive line between food alcohol and drinking alcohol
I was very strict with drinking booze but a life without tirimisu is not a life I'd wish on my worst enemy

....I'm a social drinker, I like a pint in good company and would never think of trying to give that bit of enjoyment up. I would never have a drink sitting at home alone.
One of life's big enjoyments is a quiet drink at home watching sport . I can't go out to watch sport as the 'socialising ' takes priority to what's on the tele.

Few decent beers , some snacks or a takeaway and a good night of boxing or football is a big pleasure of mine .

Same here. I also think some people have a natural predisposition to develop problems too.

Oh you're very very right on this - im the type who wakes up after a night on it and goes 'well this sucks' and then goes on a multi day binge to make it not suck
Big reason why when i quit, i quit altogether - the stuff just tends to fuel cravings

As of now I'm drinking in as close to moderation as i can eke out but i'm not going to pretend it's in anyway healthy; i just absolutely love alcohol and everything about it - the taste of it, the burn of slugging spirits, each place having it's local brew etc

What can you do eh
