Looking back, Benitez should never have been appointed, as he was always going to be on the chopping block as soon as he lost a few games.
However, we have him now. And if we carry on sacking managers, we’re only vindicating the players and giving them an excuse to underperform: “it’s because of the manager, not me” and that rotten mentality carries on in the next group of players, and so on.
In hindsight, I wish we’d have appointed a long term project manager (Potter, Howe, or someone of that ilk). Then give them time regardless of results.
The problem with Benitez is that the players don’t seem to have an identifiable way of playing or even signs of developing that. We’re relying on individuals and long range screamers. Unsustainable.
All we can do is hope that, once he gets the players in that he wants, he implements a proper system & consistent playing style. Sacking manager after manager is not the answer; but my word, I’m finding it extremely hard to accept him at the moment.
