Last night was always going to be a struggle away with our form but we won and maybe we should have won by more if we took our chances.
Personally if he is going to buy himself more time then he needs to adapt pretty quickly. He needs to play 4-3-3 and to our strengths. Pursuing with Rondon isn’t helping either. I’d have no issue with 5 at the back if we where keeping clean sheets and winning 1-0 until he has his preferred team but we aren’t. Leicester if it goes ahead is massive, Norwich even bigger. He needs 6 points. Then maybe we go into Feb in a better position with a full strength team.
At this point though I can’t see it happening.
Personally, this is the primary concern I have, and why I have real doubts regarding his ability to turn this around at all, let alone make a success of it.
I fully appreciate that there are issue with the squad in terms of quality and recent injuries; I also appreciate that behind the scenes has been dysfunctional.
His signings of Gray and Townsend have been positive too. Nevertheless, that is all pretty irrelevant if he doesn't help facilitate performances on the pitch.
We've had our worst run since Walker, our defence is declining rather than improving, the midfield look crestfallen and being offensive is not a strong point of his.
With arguably a better squad available to him than last year, it doesn't paint a pretty picture because I struggle to see where we're going to pick up points from.
If you don't really have a style of football in the first place, which I think is the case with us, it's even harder to adapt. It's the same old solution that doesn't work.
I honestly think Benitez would get more sympathy if he was trying the best avenues to get the result, but Coleman at LB, Rondon and the two in the middle won't.
On a positive note, we're through to the 4th round of the cup and we've got a victory; on the flip side, the performance and attitude was far from pleasing.
