When you say that I think you're right. But I think we do it to ourselves:
Football fans have changed a bit. Apart from radio phone in's, there was very little way to have the moan. Now its more a herd mentality, a week of us messaging on here about something we don't like and it gets more and more. Hence the toxicitity of the feelings.
Don't know if it was really much better. But no one ever called for the managers head when we got hammered for being stuffed by Man Utd, when they were the best team in England. Now we get beat by City and its the managers fault. Also think back then we'd get beat by a better but played well and we'd appriciate the hard work, effort and what we did well. Now if we'd had a brilliant game and playes the best we'd played for ages, but lost to a last min goal. Lots of people would forget about the other 89 mins. I remember my Dad taking me to see Everton when I was about 9 or 10. We played Forrest on Boxing day (The days when Forrest were one of the best teams) The blues won, but I remember Forrest scoring and my Dad telling me to clap because it was a good goal. Maybe something we've lost as football fans. I guess if you want to enjoy a football match, be a neuteral?
I'm not a supporter for Raffa or the owner. But save the booing, banners etc for after the final whistle. The fans are the 12th man. Seems like some fans actually want us to get beat? Its like booing Rondon, when he is coming on. Its not his fault he's not the player he was a few years ago. I mean how do you expect a player to play well when you've put him down before he's even kicked a ball? Not going to give him any confidence is it? Get behind the team for God's sake.
I was at doing some volunteer work for a charity, collecting at Tranmere when they played United a couple of years ago so got in for free. They were getting hammered 0-6 and they were singing and shouting for everything. It was an amazing atmosphere. I think if we encouraged the team, we'd enjoy the matches more and even get better results. Rant over.
I think it kind of ties in to what I said about the fact the 90s was such a shock, but even in 99 we were only 12 years since a title, recent silverware and even though we were largely garbage, we showed fight and never rolled over.
You could walk away from Goodison bottom of the league, but you wouldn’t be fuming, cause you knew they just weren’t good enough.
Fast forward 20-25 years and we’re trophyless still, we’ve been beaten down, and Goodison is a morgue. Me and my mates always laugh that everywhere we go, we get out sung, whether that’s by 100 Hull fans in the corner or whatever, and I can’t remember it being upbeat for like 10 years now at least.
I think when you reference getting best 5-0 by United, I think that’s what the magic of the football league was, been told about how anyone could win the league, how it was far more competitive. Sounds great, gutted I missed that part. I’m sure even when we lost, we’d at least go down trying back then.
I think for me, I’ve became so distanced from it all, we’ve went from amazing first season with Martinez, with the club throwing free coaches and free beer/pie on for the fans, to an owner who’s defied every fans wishes, and effectively left the club in a really perilous position.
I’ve never felt like I had an authoritative voice at Everton, but I always felt I was listened to, nowadays not at all.
As for your Tranmere comment, completely understand, I go to watch Marine regularly and I love it. No stress. It’s perfect.
Just feel like I’m fed up of the Premier League and what it’s fine to the game and to Everton.
