I think our complete inability to deal with set pieces is what kills me off more than anything, to be honest. How can we be so up-and-down with this?? obviously it doesn't help when Mina is out, but most of these same players have played with defensive shapes in the past that actually work and we've seen it with our own eyes... so why is no one taking responsibility for this?!

The manager changed it to a purely zonal method. It didn't work at Liverpool with good defenders so he's delusional to think it will work here.

The media need to question why he changed something that worked extremely well. Is he incompetent or arrogant?

I've held off from posting to see if any clarity would emerge. No luck, still completely gutted!

I've been sceptical of Benitez and some of my misgivings are definitely still there but I said I'll judge after a full season. That still stands.

The thought that comes back time and time again is the capitulation by our brave lionhearts time and time again. They're like polystyrene packing any time any pressure is put on them. Time and time again!!!

I've lost count of the number of times I"ve used the word 'capitulation' over the last five years. It's why we all think something bad is going to happen even at two-nil up.

Benitez may get sacked (meh - never wanted him anyway) but I'd rather we spent the money we would spend by doing this on getting rid of the absolute dross that pollutes our club!!!

You’re right it’s not just under Benitez - when the going gets tough, this lot wilt, over and over and over again. We’ve seen it too much over the last five years.

What really gets me, being brought up watching the toffees from start of the 90’s is just how easy this team is to play through and overrun. I’ve never, in my lifetime, seen us have a midfield that absolutely bossed possession and controlled games every week. At the very least they were always difficult to play against and organised.

Think of the money we’ve spent on midfielders over the last five years, the only one I’d definitely keep is Doucourre. They get outworked, played through and around to easily, don’t track runners etc. When games get stretched the positional play is all over the place, there’s no leaders in there, you could drive a bus through the middle of midfield. Schneiderlin is the poster boy for the midfield of the last 5/6 years.

People go on about the defence a lot and they’re probably not good enough either but I think the root cause of our capitulations of recent years is the midfield.
