If you're right then meh, but we're usually pretty good with our applications and i reckon if we need the work permit, we'll get it sorted.

Usually I'd agree, but for the past 2 years since Greg Dyke became chairman of the FA he has waged a war in the amount of non EU footballers playing in the country saying its affecting and blocking young English talent from gametime.

He has now got a deal in place with the home office which took effect in May of this year. I fear this could be the deal for them to block and make a statement. This lad does not meet the criteria, we will appeal but it will get thrown out.

yeah but why would martinez target a £5m rated player as a replacement. wasn't on about the money spent, just the quality.

Sorry mate, i was attempting to be sarcastic and sarcasm doesn't come across well on the Internet!

The way i see it is that we are not selling John Stones and this lad Mori is the experienced CB cover that we need in any case to cover Jags or Stones get injured / suspended and league cup games potentially too allowing for the fact that Browning looks capable but is still inexperienced at first team level.

Even if we sign Mori i wouldn't be surprised to see us still sign Van Dijk who is a class act but signing Mori suggests it is less likely we will sign Van Dijk. I am just glad he's gone for this lad Mori (haven't a clue ho he will turn out) instead of waiting for Van Dijk which IMHO is risky because Van Dijk's next move, if any, is only going to be known about 24 hours before the transfer deadline when Celtic (3) v (2) Malmo is played in Sweden. If Celtic get eliminated speaking with Celtic fans i know they reckon he's off (and he may be off anyway but they'll be happy cos he helped them get into the CL once more). But we haven't got a good record with bidding wars for any player so you could easily see us being outbid by Koeman at Southampton or Spurs who can both offer Van Dijk EL football the year too?

No i fully understand, understand what Greg Dykes doing, but i think we have a lot going for us in our application.

If it was a player who hadn't just started to get a lot of recognition, and if we weren't a club that wasn't already producing a lot of enlgish talent, i'd be worried mate, but i think we'll definitely win our appeal.

We just have to wait and see, but im more confident than you are!

South American arent renowned for their defenders though eh

Otamendi, Mascherano, Thiago Silva, Garay, Godin, Gonzalo Rodriguez, Marquinhos. Even Naldo for Wolfsburg has been quality this past year.

How many great British defenders are there? Or Spanish? Or even German? Only Italy can boast loads of great defenders in my opinion.

Obviously I'm splitting Europe up here but top level football is dominated by Europe. Whereas a healthy amount of the top defenders are actually South American, and generally, I just don't think there are as many great defenders as there used to be.

This mainly but I still stand by that South Americans arent famed for their defenders.

Crazy how 5 mill is now seen as a decent fee for a third choice centreback. Wasn't that long ago we got Lescott in as first choice with the English premium for 5.5 and Jags for 4. Baines is our defensive record transfer at 6 yet no one bats an eye anymore at 5 mill for cover. Sign of the market I guess.

We paid 6 for Heitinga to be 3rd choice mind. Chances are he'll get a lot of games.

At my kids football training last night, I talked to one of the Dad´s (business man in technology sector) who is a serious River fan and has friends involved in various of the committees running the club.

They rate Funes Mori really highly. Firstly, his path to the top has been far from straight-forward or easy. He has had to fight his way to where he is. He has, at various stages, received dogs abuse from the media, particularly the Boca loving elements of it (think of how Liverpool get treated in the UK and how all their ex players are in the media, it is the same hear with Boca). He took it all on the chin, never caused a ripple in the dressing room, did his talking on the pitch. He is considered a really level headed guy, not the norm here either for a football star. Never on the gossip pages with some "model". Most of all, they say the guy is a born winner. The bigger the challenge, the better he responds. The bigger the game, the better he plays.

The can not believe that a Champions league team did not come in for him and were amazed that Everton got him. They reckon he will be playing for the Sky 4 in three years after a huge transfer.

They say that he does make mistakes but that they are becoming fewer and fewer in his game. Keeping Ballanta out / the appointmentof Gallardo as manager (who in the first training session told everyone "this guy is a future argentine national centre half") has been the watershed moment of his career. Everything has taking over from that.

All the crying about him going is because he is the player the fans identify with most. He has dug them out time and time again to launch a golden era for the club in the last 18 months when they were relegated for the only time ever four years ago.

I told the guy that Everton fans love a fighter and he was delighted to hear that and said that you will love him so because first and foremost, that is what he is.

Because he speaks English, he should find it much easier to settle and there are plenty of Argentine footballers in the Greater Manchester area that he can have an asado with at the weekend. The usual worry with Argentines in English footie is that they get homesick or do not like the physicality. Neither of these apply to Funes Mori.

This is going to work a treat I reckon.

City just signed Otamendi for £32m who is also Argentinian and arguably the best centre half in La Liga last season.

I'm not saying Mori will be great, and in the mainstay you're right about South American players, but there are exceptions.

This lad may be one... he may not be. However, I'm not automatically writing him off because of his nationality.

@HEGS_com: The €8m fee River Plate are getting for Ramiro Funes Mori to Everton is the biggest fee they've ever received for a defender.
@HEGS_com: Funes Mori's beaten Martín Demichelis, who went to Bayern for €5.8m in 2003, into second place. Good business for River...
@Va1hallaViking: @HEGS_com is he a brave player? if he isn't scared to get stuck in, we will love him.
@HEGS_com: He'll certainly do that. You'd better have someone who can cover & do the thinking for him, though.

@HEGS_com: To be clear on Funes Mori: given the new PL TV deal it's a gamble Everton can afford, and from River's point of view it's a fantastic sale.
@HEGS_com: He'll probably have some good moments and he'll definitely have some bad ones. I wouldn't be surprised whichever way he goes from here.
@HEGS_com: I do think some of the talk about him completely awful is unfair. But as I say, it wouldn't entirely surprise me if he gets exposed in Prem.
