Random Outburst: This JOKE of a country

That's sounds about right (the sitting on the porch part.)

Home prices here definitely did not inflate like they did in other areas of the country.

You get a lot of bang for the buck when you buy a home in Texas.

On my street alone, I have two sets of neighbors that used to live up in the Northeast. When the saw what you could get home wise for the price, they sold out up there (at exhorbitant prices), and bought for less than half down here and put the rest of the money in the bank.

Bill, believe me mate. The first bit about the flat above Bargain Booze isn't far of either, you could get a decent enough house in say, Sugarland for that. In fact, when I get the time later I'll price it up!!!

Grew up in the Pittsburgh suburbs, home prices are ridiclously cheap. Allegheny Co is the oldest county in the nation and so when someone dies the kids live out of town (not many jobs) and sell the house. There was this house that was owned by a widow, well kept 2 houses from my dad, yard and 2 car garage, sold for 33K 2 years ago. Another house across the street sold for 22K, my friend bought a decent house for 24K, his mortage is 210/mo, my rent in MD is 890/mo for a 1 bedroom.

My dad once figured it was cheaper from my brother to go to university in Edinburgh (airfare and all) than to Ohio University.

Private (or out of state universities) run from 15,000-30,000/yr here and student loans are anywhere from 6.5-8.5% (though the interest is tax deductable). Friend went to law school at University of Chicago and left with a $150,000 student loan bill.

i think it was montana on a property programme on night, the houses were unbelievable and ridiculously cheap, and the jobs were quite well paid too. british can get work visas for the u.s as opposed to green cards, i was gonna go when i was working in engineering, dallas was the best paid, or left you with the most cash after rent. i went to nz instead, it just went through a lot quicker than expected or i'd have gone there for a bit.

The career I am hoping for pays more there too...

Still trying to find the catch.

We paid £85k for our house, with 4 acres of land, a barn, cellars and an outhouse. It's a big house with 3 double bedrooms and scope to alter the upstairs to incorporate a further bedroom (it's just oddly designed, having once had two families living in it). One problem is that it is in need of a lot of work, including a new roof. But I reckon a similar property in the UK would have set us back a minimum of £300k. That's quite a difference.
