I thought the same last season but the trouble is towards the end teams in mid table tail off and start dropping points to the relegation threatened clubs. I think it will be 38-40 to stay up this time.

Never that high. No way the present bottom 3 or even some higher will get 38 points. Just occurred to me that if we go down we will be back to the old days playing on terrible pitches at crappy stadia in bad weather.

A win today puts us 14th. I know we’re all doom and gloom here but the truth is like others are saying this league from about 10th or 12th down is dreadful. All we need is a bit of a better attacking threat and we’ll probably be fine. If we can get 2 more players along with Danjuma I don’t see us going down at all.
Anyone saying it’s definite one way or the other at this stage of the season is exaggerating but there’s 19 games left, we need to win an absolute maximum of 8, maybe 9 and that absolutely guarantees safety. That really is not a lot at all.
No doubt we’re in bad form but we’ve got a good keeper, good centre backs, ok full backs, a mostly good midfield, Gray who’s good on his day and Calvert Lewin who we still don’t know is the same player as he was. It’s not a great team by any stretch at all but looking at the current table from Villa in 11th down I don’t see any team that I’d say have a massively better team, Villa themselves are probably the only ones at an push but not by a whole lot.
There are good players in this squad, certainly good enough to stay up with the right manager. I think we’ll probably have a new manager at the latest after the Liverpool game, even if we pick up no points until then I think we could definitely get those 8 wins after that, which would take us to 39 points, I don’t even think it’ll need to be that high this year with how bad some teams are.

Oh, we were definitely in a salvageable position. But we have clearly decided not to salvage. If we were serious, new forwards would have come in a fortnight ago and a new manager would have been appointed between the Bournemouth debacle and the Brighton rout. Having won 3 out of 19 games this season, there is simply no expectation we will win close to half of our next 19. That's fantasy stuff, I'm afraid.
We will lose today as well, throwing away hugely important points to a direct relegation rival just as we have to Wolves and Southampton.
At this point, the sensible mental health thing to do is accept we are much more likely to be relegated than to stay up because that's what our board's behaviour points to - not to mention our actual results on the pitch. Anything else, including mathematical possibility, is optimism verging on the delusional. Can we stay up? Absolutely. Are we likely to stay up? No. Are we likely to act soon enough to change those odds? Again, no. So, I don't think the "doom and gloom" right now is all that pessimistic. The evidence suggests it is far more realistic than the alternative. Here's hoping that changes today. But I wouldn't bet on it...
