Replacing a Bathroom

Put as much lipstick on a pig as ye want, still a pig.

Your choice, pay the professional to do a proper job that is required or spend a couple of grand polishing a pig's arse then pay the tradesman when the ceilng/joists/floors cave in.

Good luck
that's not going to happen, the water was travelling down the pipe from the tap & the boards only got wet cos the screen started to leak, it was dripping off onto the ceiling below, joists are fine.
Not sure how it'll be polishing a pig tbh as it'll be ripped out completely & replaced.

Six grand sounds reasonable to me, but there`s no way it`s getting done in a week, especially if the kitchen ceiling needs doing too, as that`s a big job by itself and they won`t know how bad things are until they can get a proper look.

If the kitchen ceiling is gone, that`s the first job and if you think about it logically it could involve replacing joists, plumbing, elecs and plastering. There`s a few days at least.

gone as in the water dripped through onto the plasterboard until it soaked through, replace & skim. 6k for the job is obscene imo, i'm asking about the cabins not for you to give me a quote & show me your portfolio.

Loving the irony in this thread btw, wasn't that long ago Reidy was losing his job because as a tradesman he couldn't get paid what he was worth and was crying and hating the world for it (understandably)

Crack on lads

care to show me that ? I've worked for myself for the last 15 years, I may have been looking for something else & struggling to find anything but I wasnt even expecting 6k a month let alone a week. so you'll have to show me that irony cos i'm calling you out on that spurious comment and saying your full of crap... mod or not.

Our bathroom is absolutely stuffed, the shower was leaking (& now bust since Jan) so the kitchen ceiling is also stuffed, it may be that floorboards under the bath are also stuffed too so it is a case of ripping it all out. Anyway we had some round to give quotes in Feb and it was gonna be about 6 Grand, seems they want to charge 4k for about a weeks work MAX so thats not happening.

The 'solution' appears to be to buy 1 of the self contained shower cabins to eliminate the chance of it leaking all over again, have any of you got 1 ?
As i say it seems like the 'easy' option as it only needs connecting up to the water supply & the drain, it cuts down on a great deal of the tiling so money saved there as well & I feel that it's well within my skill set. I wouldn't feel confident ripping out the bath & fitting a 'traditional' shower enclosure as far too many mistakes to be made that could render the whole job a waste of time & way too many things to pay 'expensive' folk to do.

The bathroom is very pokey btw so we're incredibly limited with what we are able to do due to the maximum width we can get being 700mm.

It's of this 'type' that I'm thinking of, dont want steam etc as we have rock hard water that wrecks everything so the steam gen would last about a year like all the leccy showers have.

That's a shower?

Looks like something stolen out of Brundle's lab from 'The Fly'

I had my bathroom done 3 years ago by a professional. Ripped out the old suite, removed the old tiles and wall plaster. Dry-lined the walls, new tiles all over, marine ply on the floor covered with thermoplastic, new bath with shower, new sink, new toilet all fitted. Job completed in 7 working days, cost £5 grand, half of which was for the suite, fittings and tiles.

Excellent job. I've fitted 2 bathrooms myself in the past and it's a nightmare for the amateur imo.

Yeah I reckon 4-6k sounds about right for a bathroom refit.

I've moved out to North Yorkshire and here you've also got a 6+ month wait - real lack of trade.

I was thinking he could use it to go back in time and buy a bungalow.

we had quotes of that much just for the fitting, and lots of "you'll need this & that done" which imo was a case of them talking up the job, getting more work & more money.
Never was it "you might" with a price for both scenarios, I cant wait for months & i cant afford what they're quoting. I see this as a more affordable option that can also be done sooner rather than later, the 'cabin' is standalone so if a few years down the line it packs in then I'd need to cross that bridge then. I've done everything that needs to be done before tbh like flooring, some tiling although the bathroom doesnt even get damp with those things so you can get away with not tiling as well. I imagine your problem up there also includes figuring out how to heat the water & get it from the fireplace to the bathroom as well.

Looks heavy that mate - hows it getting upstairs?

Hose outside is fine. Unless there are females about.

If you can afford to do that now then it is a no brainer. Long as worst comes to the worst the money spent now doesn't cripple you from changing it later then it isn't a problem. As it's probably more enclosed than a standard shower the trick is to keep it clean (and dry) so mould doesn't set in.
