Replacing a Bathroom

When I was a bricklayer I’d get asked to do little jobs here and there. I’d tell them what the going rate was and I’d often get scoffed at. I wouldn’t bother trying to change their minds.

Bricklayers get £50k a year in London now. Good tradesmen get paid well.

a grand a week in London, so that's 700 ? in the rest of the land. these guys are talking 200k p.a.

Not quite that much as they probably don't get paid for holidays etc. You also have to factor in fuel, but if it's a one person job and takes a week then £750 sounds a fair price that most would pay to have a professional in. That lot that quoted you 4k are probably trying it on.

I always figured at 200-300 a man day. 750 for 3 days seems fair. 2-2.5k for 2 men for a week would be my upper limit. Then it depends on the materials.

Get a couple of more quotes if you want to know what it can cost.

That tardis shower thing looks crap, stop being an arl tight arse and get the whole lot done properly by a good pro. Ya can't take it with ya.

Our bathroom is absolutely stuffed, the shower was leaking (& now bust since Jan) so the kitchen ceiling is also stuffed, it may be that floorboards under the bath are also stuffed too so it is a case of ripping it all out. Anyway we had some round to give quotes in Feb and it was gonna be about 6 Grand, seems they want to charge 4k for about a weeks work MAX so thats not happening.

The 'solution' appears to be to buy 1 of the self contained shower cabins to eliminate the chance of it leaking all over again, have any of you got 1 ?
As i say it seems like the 'easy' option as it only needs connecting up to the water supply & the drain, it cuts down on a great deal of the tiling so money saved there as well & I feel that it's well within my skill set. I wouldn't feel confident ripping out the bath & fitting a 'traditional' shower enclosure as far too many mistakes to be made that could render the whole job a waste of time & way too many things to pay 'expensive' folk to do.

The bathroom is very pokey btw so we're incredibly limited with what we are able to do due to the maximum width we can get being 700mm.

It's of this 'type' that I'm thinking of, dont want steam etc as we have rock hard water that wrecks everything so the steam gen would last about a year like all the leccy showers have.

Used to do loads of bathrooms years ago but it’s been a long time. Game’s moved on since I was a labourer.

I appreciate this doesn’t help you along, sorry lol

write me a script for a green whistle and nobody will be arsed about our lack of a shower... or i can get the plumber to take a £50 call out fee for the job if hes off his face.

Finally it's sorted.

Labour £2800
materials he supplied £350
Shower, tray, all of the bathroom basically £1500 from Stax wholesalers

room got ripped out completely apart from 2 halves of walls that hadn't been tiled previously. Complete new floorboards, plasterboard, tiled completely, all replumbed & fully installed, fix wall on landing & ceiling in kitchen.

1597073161165.webp

Saved a fair bit going to stax but the main saving there is on the labour as the other quotes didnt include doing the floor, the plasterboarding, the wall outside or kitchen ceiling.

Cause of it all in the 1st place is apparently that the tiles had been leaking about 2 & 3 rows up, he said never grout the same day as fixing the tiles as the adhesive can make the grout dry out too quickly and become porous.

That’s class that mate.

Any chance I can pop around for a go of that shower?

Looks great that. This year at least.

Just wait until next year when avocado or brown bathroom units become the fashion.

My grandfather always believed in paying someone else to do work for you because his dad was a plumber and so understood the importance of supporting tradesmen.
Unfortunately if you can do something yourself it's difficult to justifying paying someone else in my eyes. Only if I've not got the time will I pay someone..

I paid someone to fit my front bay windows double glazing as they were a ball ache. Everything else I can do. Plumbing, electrics, fitted kitchen and bathrooms. Raised all the doors heights. New frames and doors etc. It makes upgrades or repairs to the house a lot cheaper.. plus I think I do a better job a lot of the time!
