You can't be a defense and counter team with a sieve in net. I've said this in his thread but better for Pickford is going from the worst GK playing regularly in the league to merely pretty bad. We're the width of the post from him maybe dropping us 4 points in the last week and we're convinced around the forum that those were good showings. It's a disaster waiting to happen.

Get Olsen in and whatever 4 CBs, 2 DMs and let Iwobi, James, Richarlison and DCL figure out a way to score every week.

Well one of those posts was down to a brilliant save from Pickford, which few other goalkeepers would have made.

It actually really isn't. We have two goals from open play in the last three games. One an OG and the other a goalkeeping error on a shot from 30 yards.

Unless you've got something I'm missing.

But we have taken the lead in all 3 games, and really sat back. Whatever we think of the philosophy of it (I can see some sense given how many goals we were conceding) it has obviously impacted the amount of goals weve scored from open play.

I'll put it bluntly, but for the rest of this season, if we aim to be solid, and rely heavily on crosses, set plays and a moments magic from James/Richarlinson to score, that is a good tactic.

We've got like 11 shots from open play the last 3 games combined. For me that isn't enough and it is reflected in the goals.

More than our opponents I'm honestly not sure about but I also don't know if I like that way of looking at it as both teams having low numbers just makes it a finishing contest every week and that's pretty much a coin flip. That was one of Silva's issues.

What were you expecting against two of the top teams in the league with 4 first team players out?

No I'm talking the Mount one which was him going the wrong way before a free kick was even struck and the Luiz one which was him dropping a cross.

The James one was a good save, but nothing more.

Well Mount was comfortably over. The Luiz one was a mistake and he had to get it out of his game (as was the Mount one to be fair).

The James one was a wonder save mate. A deflection, under bodies etc, to get that touch was incredible. I'm not sure any other keepers in the league get to it. Ultimately worth 2 points for us.

As I said I can get behind those tactics if you drop Pickford.

Pickford in net and no tight lead is safe even if we're defending well. As that seems to be the way we are playing it I think we're asking for trouble down the road not trying to put teams to the sword.

I don't think we're thinking about the same freekick with Mount. It literally hit the bottom of the post and he was standing in the center of the goal.

Why are you so bothered about the fact we didn’t carve them open at will for 90 minutes from open play then?
Because I think we are a really good team that could do some really cool things this year but I don't think that we can do them if we aren't able to open teams up in open play and instead rely on playing defensively with a complete liability in net. I want to see us make something out of this season and I just don't see this set up as anything but a false dawn. Something has to be changed or at some point the Pickford mess ups will end up in the net and we will have nothing to respond with.

I'm worried that we see this as the answer and it isn't that. Just like Carlo thought the back 3 was the answer after Fulham and it very much wasn't.

We aren’t a really good team with 4 key players out though are we?
