In footballing terms, the Olympics is far from the most prestigious competition. But come on, it's the Olympics. I don't begrudge anyone the thrill of a lifetime standing on that podium with that medal around their neck, wearing their nation's colors, and watching the flag get hoisted to the anthem.

Yes, we have to manage his minutes so his hamstrings don't snap. Yes, he can be moody and sulky. Yes to all that. Still, in an offseason of negativity so far, Richy Mrs Begovich and the horse are the only ones really stepping up the enthusiasm so I'm all thumbs up over here.

For most of the rest of the world, and especially Europe, it is not - which means the South Americans are deluding themselves if they think winning it is of any consequence whatsoever. Football is in the Olympics for sponsorship reasons only. It brings in huge crowds in the normal course of events. But it's effectively an exhibition sport that is included for the money. Richarlison lost the Copa America - the real big one this summer. Evertonians fawning over a debased gold medal this weekend will soon be disabused of Richarlison's "sacrifice" when he stinks the gaff out or gets injured from exhaustion before Christmas. We're a soft touch of a club, set up for a plucky mid table position. Liverpool, meanwhile, refused to release Salah for Tokyo. And we wonder why we're miles behind...

It's a fact. Football outgrew the Olympics in 1930 with the inaugural World Cup. I live in Germany - the tournament was an afterthought here. They sent a squad full of has-beens and never-will-bes (mind you, they did that at Euro 2020 as well, to be fair).

Quite, but does that detract from South Americans viewing it as an achievement? In other words, is a European view the only one that matters here?

If the Europeans do not take it seriously, then beating sides that do not take it seriously obviously diminishes the achievement. The South Americans can view it in any way they like. Good luck to them. They can only beat what's in front of them, just like us in the Florida Cup.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Townsend-Iwobi-Gray behind Dom or Rich on Saturday.

Really awe-inspiring stuff.

It does have some pace, at least.
 

Tbh, I don't understand why Olympic footy isn't taken more seriously. In Tennis it's practically a Grand Slam.

Hope he wears his medal under his shirt every game and then uses it to garrote VVD in the derby.
