Having been out with the kids since early doors today was the first presser I've missed for ages.

And I'm just catching up now.

Blimey.

Desperate stuff indeed, if not a tad bonkers t'boot.

He's gone after the next loss (or 2). Vault me.

If I'm right now the narrative is.,
Baines speaks out with a direct criticism of the manager.
The Echo reports this honestly.
The manager forces an apology out of Baines.
This proves there is a huge rift between players and manager.
A few things that worry me about this narrative are..
Journalists need you to read their stories. So is it just possible that they've been true to type and a relatively balanced statement from Leighton has become a shock horror headline designed to attract readers desperate for friction.
Baines is not known for rocking the boat or making snidey remarks about fellow professionals. So is it possible that he was embarrassed about how this had been presented in the press and wanted to straighten this out within the club.
It is normal club policy to penalise players for speaking out in a way that criticises the club. So is it possible that when confronted with this question Martinez needed to clarify that he felt Leighton hadn't said anything wrong but just allowed himself to be misinterpreted.
The Echo can play up to the mood of some fans all they like but they took what was said and created a tabloid headline and controversial tone to attract traffic. Does anyone actually think Baines will be happy they did that?

...how does one 'allow' themselves to be misinterpreted mate? You either are or you aren't and you have no sway in it in the whatsoever...

...and whatever way the the scribe has chosen to choke the headline it doesn't take a single, solitary thing away from the body nor the content of what was said. It's a VERY quotable, audi-rec'd interview.

And - whichever way it's viewed - what he said is very telling indeed.

But nowhere near as telling as the way the manager has dealt with it.

What if we went out there, played an absolute blinder and won 4-0. Done the same at Palace, beat Southampton 2-0 and now it's Tuesday the day before the derby, seriously lads and girls, how would you be feeling and would your comments digest a bit?
What if our home form had been steaming piles of elephant dung for over a year? You're pretending that people are fickle. This has been a long time coming.
What if we won every game next year? League, cup x2. Wow yes, let's get behind Marty El Fly, because 72pt gigawatts, Biff's sporting Almanac ect..

It's well established that journalists know people are effected more by headlines and lead statements than the actual content. And I'm amazed how anyone could read what was actually said and feel it is represented by the tone of the article.
Presume saying he allowed himself to be misinterpreted was to avoid directly saying they've been malicious. But a lot of clubs are encouraging players to say as little as possible to avoid how it's presented in the press. In Europe you have the ridiculous situation of players covering their mouths when talking in private to avoid causing problems.
Why do people think Baines himself won't be more annoyed at his interview being used in this way than with anything the manager said. He didn't even raise it again. It was raised by the journalist

I would be saying, pass me the condiments butler, because I'm about to eat my hat.
We are abject mate, have you not noticed?

If this happened in the convincing manner suggested then it will be the first time in two years we would have shown such form. So although it could be possible, if the idea was to be entertained for a minute, it is highly unlikely. Having any belief we can actually win a league game at home, against teams outside the bottom 3, shows great courage to be fair. So I salute you for that.
