Roberto Martinez discussion

is it ridiculous to expect to have a better team than the likes of watford and crystal palace?

No - if we could match their finances, scouting and squads, we could match their performances.

Of course, we don't know whether they will be successful for very long. And the new broadcasting fees may introduce a new order.

Our scouting, finances and squads are all superior to those two.
Palaces record signing was £10m:
Watfords record signing was 6m:

Not convinced the argument of big spending little clubs stands up to be honest.

A few years ago we had a squad massively better than most teams, Martinez has spent money since then, and those around really havn't strengthened enough to justify us falling behind them.

Our scouting team used to be ace as well, not sure if Martinez replaced those scouts that found players like Coleman, but if so that's on him too as our scout network was previously renowned for doing a good job.

we cant defend set pieces, simples

Fair play for the bottling bit with Moyes. If we could only get @Saint Domingo and @ianefc to admit it as well. We all know it to be a reality.

Martinez has managed a couple of notches on his belt...if anything the eye test will say we are trying to win games against the top sides usually. Anyone bringing up the Kendall/United game this season at home deserves a punch in the face.

To get on with what you think is the primary discussion, what is he building here, and how long it will last.

He is building a side full of potentially world class players. Ross, Rom, Del, Stones being the big four. McCarthy and Coleman being within a sniff of them. Who knows what will happen with some of the other young players he's signed.

He is taking his chances on the only route we have to winning the league because of finances. Buy young and buy low. Find a few like Cleverley along the way to help.

Will he keep it together? That is the big question. That said, he's found incredible talent that we will profit off like we've never done before. I reckon we'll be alright if we end of selling the likes of Stones/Rom. A small nation's GDP would cringe at the money we got.

Anyway, I'll take your answer off the air. It's time to sleep here.

I've answered this question loads of times on here. Ultimately some people think that whenever Moyes lost a big game he bottled it whereas there's a million excuses (literally) as to why Martinez didn't do exactly the same when he loses one (including the laughable 'yeah but at least we play to win').

There's just too many subjective problems with this sort of thing, as in what constitutes a big game? Moyes is always panned for 'bottling' the 09 cup final. Were the Liverpool Villa Stoke and United games in that run not big games? (Let's not get into us missing our top 3 players against one of Europe's top side at the time).

Equally Martinez gets praised for breathing Arsenal in his first season to overtake them, but the with Champiobs league in our own hands we lost at home to Palace the next game. So which was the big game?

The Wigan game was a massive low point and for me is the only big game you could possibly accuse him of bottling. I'm sure if Martinez had done it though the focus would have been on Neville's errors, Fellaini's desertion and Wigan's net spend profile or something stupid like that.

Personally I am just of the opinion that both managers don't win many big games in the same way lots of other clubs don't because of a lack of quality.

In Martinez's time here we didn't win: the Arsenal QF, the Palace league game, any derby (choked a fair few), the second leg v Kiev, no games v City or Spurs, no away wins aside from beating moyes at United. So we're hardly a big game force under Martinez either. If you want to excuse Martinez because you like him and pan Moyes because you don't that's up to you.

Dunno mate if they are serious they may pot him as a statement of intent and bring in a bigger name. I'd be all for it personally.

I'd like to see what we can do with a little more quality before binning him, whatever brings us the glory works for me though :)

Suspect if you throw enough money at it, most managers will progress us with the setup we currently have.

Excellent post, how people refer to us getting beat by Chelsea in an FA Cup Final as a bottle job is beyond me.

Even the FA Cup Semi Final against Liverpool was a game that was ultimately decided by an horrendous error from Distin, and as has been mooted by many on here in defence of Martinez "You can't blame a manager for individual errors". Throw in the fact our starting XI that day included Gueye whilst they had Suarez and it starts to make sense.

Another one, Villareal... We apparently 'bottled it' against a team who got to the Semi Final in our first European game in 10 years. Sod the fact so few of our players had played at that level before, or we actually might've progressed if it wasn't for some dubious refereeing.

The Wigan game was horrific but it's football and sometimes a team plays you off the park. Poor tactics from the manager, terrible performance from the players, throw the book at them but one game doesn't define your reign.

If Martinez goes out of the cup against City I won't be slaughtering him for it. They have a better team, realistically I fully expect us to lose. In the same way I highly doubt we'll win the FA Cup this year. You need so much luck for that to happen in terms of the draw and the result/performance on the day. You draw Arsenal away in the next round and it could be curtains.

That's why the league is so important, it gives a true reflection of the impact he's having on the team. If we finish the season languishing in the bottom half having had some bad luck in the cups it's not going to look good for him. I live happily in the knowledge that Martinez will give the league priority unlike the point scoring few on here using this emphasis on the cups to suit their agenda.
