Roberto Martinez discussion

He's thoroughly old fashioned

Big lad, good in the air and likes a cruncher now and then

Exact opposite of a "Martinez player", and that's ultimately why he didn't find his way to the first team set up

Two managers at Blackburn have stuck with him now and he's entering some good defensive performances

He's never going to be World Class, but he'll do a job for a top tier team at the back. Nothing wrong with that

People mock but how many points would his aerial prowess have got us? Even if just one of those Liverpool Norwich or Palace headers were prevented we're 2 points better off. All hypothetical of course but we are missing a truly dominant centreback in the air.

Of all the youth players jettisoned, he's the one that makes the least sense. He had a very strong showing while on loan at Yeovil, which he's maintained at Blackburn, and the few times he got a chance in the first team he played well

Ultimately though, Martinez has his way of playing and I can appreciate that Duffy isn't the ball to feet defender he wanted

What annoys me is the people acting like he was rubbish all along, when he patently wasn't

If he was good enough, he would still be here.

If is that good, premiership team would be courting him.

Shawcross does not do tekkers, Martinez wanted him.

Duffy was never, ever, ever ready for first team football

Yeah because Martinez is known world wide for his unquestionable approach to defending and those who take part in it........

Antolin Alcaraz........

He didn't have a strong showing at Yeovil. Although I concede it wasn't all his fault. They were crap.

That's a little premature. It's still an open question. A lot of people in the Premier League (including Moyes) say the hardest thing in the league is to score goals. It's easier to play like a Pulis side withe men behind the play and hope to nick goals somehow. Personally, I wouldn't want to watch that week-in, week-out. So, arguably, Martinez has done the hardest part. Now, it's a question of whether he can row backwards a little but keep the style. Given the progress he's made on the attacking front, I'm willing to see how his team develops.

I wouldn't dismiss Pulis so quickly. He understands defending as a team and he can achieve relative success with very modest resources.

His team has never been relegated - which is amazing when you look at the Crystal Palace team he took over. In fact, he took Palace to 11th place and was voted Manager of the Year.

That doesn't mean that his teams are attractive to watch, but he does get the best out of his squads.

Antolin Alcaraz........

He never settled at Everton, but Antolin Alcaraz was good enough to get a winner's medal at Wembley.

Playing in front of Robles, he successfully marshalled a makeshift back three with two novice wingbacks against the talent of Tevez, Aguero, Silva, Yaya Toure...
