Roberto Martinez discussion

You're missing the point...

The average age of our starting 11 this season, is higher than the one that finished with our record points tally.

So again. The squad that finished 5th - ordered by appearances;

Not much different to now, is it?!
Only thing to be taken from that table is the utterly outstanding scoring record of Magaye Gueye.......

You cant handle the facts.

One step away from Wembley
6 points off 5th
Best attacking football for a generation
47 goals scored in 24 games.

Enjoy the self induced misery.

I'm sorry but I seem to remember last season it was all about how many PLACES we were away from the bottom 3, rather than points. Whenever people brought up that we were 3 points off 18th in February, you'd respond with "but we're 12th so we're safe as houses". How is this any different? We are 11th, so we're actually 6 places off 5th. There are 6 teams between us and 5th, separated by 6 points. By your own standards, that is in fact a long, long way off 5th

And me.

Again, that's the point - we're better now than we were so it's a jarg excuse. Inexperience is laughed away when you consider we were even more inexperienced when finished 5th.

I can't be bothered to do the maths with the average starting XI age, but (and I'm not trying to blindly defend Martinez here) in fairness we've had Mori and Galloway playing for large parts of the season who are obviously a lot younger than Jags and Baines respectively. Stones is playing every game and is vital to the way we play - he was a bit part player in the first season.

I can see exactly what he means when he talks about the younger players taking much bigger roles now. First season the young guns were complimenting us in a way - now the side is built around them.

No, that was only one of the points you were making. I think you're missing my point.

You quoted Martinez talking about the difference from three years ago and then popped up a list of the squad from two and a half years ago, which was, at best, misleading.

For sure, we did better in 2013/14 than we're doing at the moment, but that wasn't what you quoted Martinez on. The quote you posted was quite specific about pointing out a change from three years ago.

Basically you have a point to make, but have made it using faulty data.

The point you make is valid, in that our form this season is worse than it was in 2013/14, but Martinez was talking about a ceiling, a way of thinking if you like, and sometimes you have to tear something apart and put it back together to make it better, and, once you get past all the management bull that he speaks, that's the guts of what he's saying.

2013/14 was a glimpse of what could happen given a different mentality. It's still work in progress and he may well not be good enough to finish the job, but the thinking behind the plan is solid.

That's 'cause we not only won but won with some style....;)
We did indeed. Personally I am over the moon that Roberto has obviously listened to the concerns of the plotter's and the realists on this forum and reigned in his attacking style slightly and adopted a more balanced approach. The introduction of a bit more steel in the midfield (MO) has also helped. Long may this more balanced approach continue

There isn't a single key player in this seasons squad, missing from the squad that finished 5th.

We're 11th. We're underperforming and it's not because we're inexperienced - because the same squads average age is higher than it was.

No, that was only one of the points you were making. I think you're missing my point.

No, it wasn't.

Honestly... Feel like a stuck record here.

At the actual press conference, on the subject of this being a disappointing season, Martinez said three years ago the side was experienced and knew how to win, but now, it's full of young immense potential.

“The reality is that we have taken a very different approach to what we are as a team than we took at this club three years ago. Three years ago it was a very experienced team who knew how to win games but had some sort of ceiling. Now we have gone very young with immense potential to go beyond that ceiling, and there has been investment in that potential so we will get the rewards from it.

That's definitely over egging it and a piss poor excuse for underperforming this season.

To demonstrate the point, I listed the squad from Martinez first season - which obviously knew how to bloody win because we won more PL games than ever before.

We've still got that same squad. No key player is missing.

To say 3 years ago we had a very experienced team who knew how to win, then tell us, who are we missing from that very experienced team who knew how to win? Distin?!

Basically you have a point to make, but have made it using faulty data.

I've not, your splitting hairs and the point could be made with the squad from a few months before. What squad should I use? I used the squad from his first full season...

Tell us, who are we missing from that very experienced team 3 years ago that we don't have now...

Again, same bloody squad...

Aye, looking purely at average age in the squad means you miss the fact that young players have much more responsibility in the current setup.
